Diane S. Thayer, 90, of Oakland, passed away peacefully on July 13, 2024, at Goodwill Retirement Community in Grantsville. Born on December 19, 1933, in Sudbury, Canada, she was the daughter of the late George and Margaret Senior.
Diane was a graduate of the College of Wooster where she met and married her late husband Fred Thayer. After graduation she and Fred moved to North Carolina where she taught elementary school while Fred studied law. Diane and Fred then moved to Oakland to start their family.
Diane was an active participant in the Garrett County community, serving as the first Chair of the Garrett College Board of Trustees - Organizing College Board. She was a member of the Turkey Neck Yacht Club where she and Fred would participate in sailboat races. Meals at Diane's house were highly sought after prizes at various Yacht Club functions and fundraisers. A consummate hostess, Diane was known for the parties she would throw and the hundreds of Christmas cookies and candies she would bake for family and friends. As an avid reader, Diane was a dedicated patron of the Ruth Enlow Library and a familiar face at books clubs around town. Diane and Fred were both lovers of travel and ventured as far as Antarctica and Australia. Diane was a longtime parishioner at St. Matthew's Episcopal Church of Oakland, often volunteering at the Nearly New Shop and the nearby Transportation Museum. She also loved playing bridge, watching the Steelers, going to the opera, and tending to her garden.
In addition to her parents, Diane was predeceased by her husband Frederick A. Thayer III and her son Frederick A. Thayer IV. She is survived by grandchildren, Rebecca C. Thayer of Brookline MA, and Frederick A. Thayer V of Oakland MD; sister Mary Barr of Renfrew Ontario; niece Martha Barr of Ashton Ontario; and nephew David George Barr of Barrie Ontario.
Friends will be received at the C & S Fredlock Funeral Home, P.A., 21 N 2nd St., Oakland, on Tuesday, July 16, 2024, from 4 to 6 PM. A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, July 17, 2024 at 10 AM at St. Matthew's Episcopal Church in Oakland with Rev. Dr. Chip Lee officiating. Interment will be in the Oakland Cemetery.In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Ruth Enlow Library or St. Matthew's Episcopal Church of Oakland.
