Our father, Don Eldon Laird, age 98, passed away peacefully on January 24, 2024 in Tooele, Utah after a courageous battle with Dementia and Alzheimer disease.
Dad was born on December 12, 1925 to Matthew A and Sarah Denton Garrett Laird in Eureka, Utah. The youngest of nine children. Dad spent most of his childhood in Eureka, but due to his mother's passing, moved to Salt Lake to live with his older siblings. He attended West High School. However, in April of 1944, he left school and enlisted into the US Navy. Dad served on the USS Langfitt, transporting troops during WWII and was honorably discharged in June of 1946.
After the war, he worked at Tooele Army Depot as a Munitions Operator Supervisor. He met our mother, the love of his life, Carol Coon. They married on May 1, 1952. During the course of their marriage, they were blessed with four children: Jeff (Mary) Laird, Jack (Susie) Laird, Linda (Marshall) Simpson, and Larry (Connie) Laird. He was blessed with 7 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
Dad retired from the Tooele Army Depot in July of 1979.
Dad is survived by his children and their spouses, his grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents, his loving wife Carol, and all of his siblings.
We would like to express our thanks to Cottage Glen Assisted Living for all their love and support of our dad.
Special thank you to Mobile Nursing and CNS for their hospice care.
In lieu of flowers, the family wishes donations be made to your favorite charity.
Services will be held on Monday, February 5, 2024 at 11:00 AM at Memorial Redwood Mortuary.
Interment at Valley View Memorial Park, West Valley City, Utah.
