Donald Boyce Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Schellhaas & Sons F.H. & Cremation Svcs., Inc. - Franklin Park on Nov. 21, 2025.
Donald Jefferson Boyce, Sr: Oct 14, 1933 - Nov 18, 2025

Don Boyce died peacefully in Wexford, Pennsylvania on November 18, 2025, at the age of 92. He was born in Wilmington, Delaware on October 14, 1933. He attended Conrad High School in Newport, Delaware and joined the United States Army in 1955. He married his high school sweetheart, Patricia Sanner, in June of 1955 and spent nearly 70 years of wonderful married life. Don joined IBM in the late 50's and applied his expertise to the development of the IBM System/360 and 370 systems in a career that lasted 30 years, retiring in 1987 in Boca Raton, FL, where he finished his career helping to design the early IBM PC.

Pat and Don were avid golfers - both achieving holes-in-one in their golfing careers. They were inseparable: playing golf, bridge, pinochle, euchre, enjoying boat rides on Lake Greenwood and traveling around the world. Don was a great organizer and always volunteered when "the team" needed help. In New York he was a key member of the Jaycees and coordinated the restoration of the old Apalachin Grange into a library. He also became a volunteer fireman on Fripp Island, and was the "gatekeeper" at Grand Harbor, SC where he kept track of the security gate process. He loved keeping records and was the go-to man for handicaps, scoring, and for nearly 50 years, right up until November 17, he ran the family football pool - had it on a spreadsheet and kept meticulous records for friends, sons, grandchildren and cousins.

Most of all Don loved his family and getting everyone together at the beach in Delaware and South Carolina, or the lake, or on the golf course. Many family tournaments were held on Fripp Island over the years. He loved to sing and dance. At weddings he and Pat were absolute stars on the dance floor. He was also a man of faith and especially enjoyed the fellowship at The First Presbyterian Church in Greenwood, SC.

Don will join Pat in Heaven, as she passed away in June of 2025. He is survived by his three boys: Jeff (Kathy), Keith (Rosemary), and Dave (Karen). He had 6 grandchildren: Kevin, Kyle, and Jameson; Judy (Lyon), Cindy (Facci), and Molly (DiTommaso). He also had 7 great grandchildren and 1 great-great grandson. He was also a great "Dad" to the family dogs over the years: Suzy, Holly, and Cassie.

Don will be interred at the National Cemetery of the Alleghenies. A memorial gathering will be held on Monday, December 29 from 10-12pm, at Schellhaas Funeral Home in Wexford, where a service will be held at 12pm.

Memorials may be made to Saint Jude Children's Research Hospital.
