Donald Roger Hoskins

 

Donald Roger Hoskins, a devoted family man, skilled engineer, and avid adventurer, passed away on

September 19, 2023, in Medford, Oregon. He was born on July 14, 1938, in Elma, Washington. Don’s

unwavering presence will be greatly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Don’s passion for life and his enthusiasm for various DIY projects left an indelible mark on his family. He

was always ready to offer his expert advice on home improvement and automotive repairs. His loved

ones recall fond memories of seeking his guidance whenever they faced a challenge. Don’s

resourcefulness and dedication will forever be cherished by those he leaves behind.

Not only was Don a talented handyman, but he also had a thirst for adventure. Rafting trips with his

close friends brought him immense joy and provided cherished moments of camaraderie in the great

outdoors. He also reveled in the pursuit of hunting and fishing as well as exploring nature through hiking

expeditions. Traveling occupied a special place in Don’s heart as he embarked on numerous journeys to

far-flung corners of the world. His travel tales were captivating, and he shared them eagerly with friends

and family.

Education played a crucial role in Don’s life. He earned a Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering

from Oregon State University through the USAF ROTC. With an unwavering spirit of intellectual curiosity,

he went on to complete a Masters in Electrical Engineering from the University of Southern California.

His academic accomplishments laid a solid foundation for his professional endeavors.

After completing his education, Don served the United States Air Force dutifully until retiring as a

Lieutenant Colonel in 1981. Throughout his military career, he was stationed in various locations

including Washington, California, Turkey, Mississippi, New York, New Jersey, Toronto (Canada), Ottawa

(Canada), and Hawaii. In addition to these postings, he had the opportunity to explore many other

countries worldwide. Don’s dedication and service to his country will always be remembered with

profound gratitude.

Don’s vibrant personality and genuine interest in people made him an exceptional person to be around.

His ability to connect with individuals from all walks of life was a testament to his love for socializing.

Known for his kindness and generosity, he delighted in preparing cappuccinos and pancakes for guests

or taking them out for a delightful dinner. Don’s warmth and hospitality created an atmosphere of joy

wherever he went.

Travel was not merely a personal passion for Don; it was a means to form lasting relationships. He

visited all 50 states in the United States, extensively explored Canada, Europe, Africa, Australia, and Asia.

Don’s love for exploration was cherished by those who shared in his journeys. His trips to Norway to visit

his relatives there held special meaning for him.

In addition to his remarkable accomplishments, Don devoted much of his time and energy to charitable

endeavors. He selflessly volunteered for numerous charities, tirelessly advocating for the disadvantaged

and working tirelessly to improve the lives of disadvantaged children in Jackson county. His unwavering

commitment demonstrated his empathetic nature and deep compassion for others.

Don is preceded in death by his parents, Bill and Mary Hoskins, his beloved son Michael Hoskins and his

wife of 54 years, Julia Hoskins. He is survived by his wife, Nan, his loving daughter, Angie, grandchildren

Jessica Killian, Matthew Killian, Emma Hoskins and Linden Hoskins. Their lives were enriched by the love

and guidance he provided as a grandfather figure throughout their lives.

Late in life, Don found companionship with Nan Goodwyn, who brought immense joy into his world as

his second wife. Their love and shared experiences brought comfort to both during their time together.

A service to celebrate and honor Don’s life will be held on September 25, 2023, at 1:00 p.m. The event,

an interment, will take place at Eagle Point National Cemetery located at 2763 Riley Rd, Eagle Point, OR

97524. Family and friends are invited to gather to pay their final respects to this remarkable individual.

Don Roger Hoskins shaped the lives of his loved ones through his unwavering presence, boundless

creativity, and kindness. He will be remembered as an incomparable handyman, a daring adventurer,

and a compassionate advocate for those in need. May his memory continue to inspire all who had the

privilege of knowing him.
