Amid the Great Depression, when Americans faced hardship and an uncertain future, Carl Schempp and Lulu Ruth Daum found a beacon of hope in the birth of their only child, Donald John Schempp, on August 8, 1930, in Lakewood, Ohio. The challenges of Don's early years during the Depression deeply influenced his life and values.
Don graduated from Staunton Military Academy in Virginia and proudly served in the Marine Corps during World War II and the Korean War. As a member of the Greatest Generation, he faced the horrors of war with quiet determination, dedicating himself to protecting and defending his country.
After Korea, Don met and married the love of his life, Mary Rasmussen, a fun-loving and beautiful woman who became the rock of their family. Together, they had five children, creating a lively household filled with love, friends, and family. Don worked tirelessly as a bricklayer and small business owner, teaching his children the values of hard work, honesty, and caring for loved ones through his example. Mary managed the household and created a harmonious and Christ-filled home.
When the economy hit Cleveland hard in the late 1980s, Don and Mary moved to Houston in search of new opportunities. He continued in construction before investing in a video store, which he ran with Mary and several of their children. They lived in Houston for many years before returning to Cleveland to be closer to family.
For decades, Don collected and restored antique European clocks and became a recognized expert in his field. He owned hundreds of these clocks over the years and made many friends through industry shows and his extensive network.
Throughout his life, Don exemplified the American Dream, tirelessly working to create a better future for the next generation through his dedication and hard work. His legacy is one of resilience and unwavering commitment to his family and country. Don's enduring spirit and steadfast devotion to those he loved are evident in the way he lived his life. He is preceded in death by his son, James Schempp, and his beloved wife, Mary Schempp.
Don is survived by his children Sue Waddell (Jeff), Bob Schempp, Kathy Schempp, (Pete Roads) and Karen Adams. He was blessed with grandchildren Carrie Martens (Bob), Katy Belanga (Chip), Mark Waddell (Ashley), Ashlynn Schempp, the late Cassandra Schempp, Sierra Schempp, Owen Wagner, Jason Wagner, Cole Adams, and Jack Adams. He is also a great-grandfather to many children whom he adored.
A private ceremony will be held by family with change of location to Busch Funeral, 163 Avon-Beldon Road, Avon Lake, OH 44012.

Our hearts go out to all, as there are undeniable and loving family ties throughout the years. So sorry to hear of Don's passing but comforted in the fact that I am sure your mom is happy to have him back in her company. Love to all Nancy Bir and family.
