Dorie Souto "Dorla Philion" 85, of Thief River Falls, MN, peacefully passed away on Tuesday, November 26, 2024 surrounded by loved ones at The Benedictine Living Nursing Home in Ada, MN.
Visitation will be held from 1:00 PM until 3:00 PM with a 2:30 PM prayer service on Sunday, December 1, 2024 at Johnson Funeral Service in Thief River Falls. Visitation will also begin at 12:30 PM with the funeral service at 1:30 PM on Monday, December 2, 2024 at St. Bernard's Catholic Church with Father Rick Lambert presiding and Father John Kleinwachter concelebrating.
Dorie was born February 11th, 1939, daughter of Lawrence (Jap) and Julia (Jay) Philion (Dentz) in the home of her uncle and aunt Albert & Clara Dentz in Mahnomen, MN. She was the fourth of five children and was raised in Red Lake Falls, MN. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Joseph's Catholic church in Red Lake Falls, MN where she attended grade school at St. Joseph's Catholic School and graduated from Lafayette High School in 1957. Shortly after graduating high school, she obtained her cosmetology license.
She met Joseph Souto in San Antonio, TX and they later married in 1962. Dorie & Joe went on to have 2 children, Carmen and Debbie. Through the years, they lived at different Air Force Bases in the United States and Puerto Rico, where Carmen was born.
Dorie worked at Northwest Medical Center in Thief River Falls as a Housekeeper for 16 years on the CNC floors and enjoyed working with the elderly. She would bring her mom's dog Buttons, to visit the residents and brighten their day. She retired from Northwest Medical Center in February of 2004 but continued to clean for friends as a side hustle.
While retired, Dorie had time to make her famous rhubarb cake and deliver it to local care centers and friends at local businesses in TRF. She would also bring communion to people that were unable to get to church.
Dorie, along with her cousin Mary Ann Dentz, and Fr. John Klienwacther, would plan yearly concert outings at the Mahnomen casino where they would enjoy a live concert and the buffet.
She also loved to spend time vacationing with her children & grandchildren and was an avid Minnesota sports fan that would faithfully watch the Vikings and Twins.
Dorie was a long-time member of St. Bernard's Catholic Church along with volunteering for many years making coleslaw for the weekly Lenten Fish Frys. She was also a long-time member of the VFW Auxiliary and the Eagles Auxiliary in Thief River Falls.
She is survived by Carmen Souto, Thief River Falls, MN, Debbie (Bret) Hyland Thief River Falls, MN along with their children Danielle Weckwerth (Vinnie Rich), and great-granddaughter Yelena, Moorhead, MN, Anthony Hyland, Thief River Falls, MN, and Bryce Hyland (Sarah Housker), Thief River Falls, MN. Dorie is also survived by Tricia Tibbetts and Charel Weckwerth, and many other relatives and friends.
Dorie was predeceased by her parents Jap and Jay Philion, brothers Jerry Philion (Sue), Marlin (Patsey) McDougall, Conrad (Barbra) McDougall, Clinton McDougall (June), Nephew Brian McDougall, and Joseph Souto, along with many aunts, uncles, and cousins.
