Doris Irene Baines

Doris Irene Holland Baines, 95, went to be with the Lord on Thursday, October 3, 2024, at the home of her daughter in Augusta, GA. Doris was born on October 2, 1929, to Louise Frances Rountree Holland and James Clifton Holland.
She was diligent and hard working at an early age, growing up during The Great Depression on a farm. During high school, she worked in the fields after school and on Saturdays either at her aunt and uncle's store or later at the James Freedman Store. She graduated as Salutatorian of her class from Gates County High School in 1947. She then moved to Suffolk, VA, to become the bookkeeper for United Department Store.
In February, 1949, Doris married David Warren Baines of Nansemond County, VA, her beloved husband for 63 years. After having their first child in 1955, she left the department store to partner with David in running their farm. She raised two daughters, was active in their school activities, and was an active member of Whaleyville Methodist Church. She passed on her faith in The Lord Jesus Christ to the future generations of her family. Her gentle spirit and godly wisdom will be greatly missed.
Doris is predeceased by her parents, her brother Clifton Hunter Holland, her husband David, and her daughter Donna Frances Baines Sawyer. She is survived by her daughter Dolores Baines DeWald of Augusta, GA; her son-in-law Ken L. Sawyer of Suffolk, VA; grandchildren: Clara Adele DeWald (Randy Shouse) of Augusta, GA, Seth Baines Sawyer (Chelsea) of Guyton, GA, and Quinton Banes DeWald (Courtney) of Asheville, NC; great-grandchildren: Elisha Maddox DeWald, Allison Virginia Sawyer, Nathaniel Levi Shouse, Marshall Bennett Sawyer, and Zeno James DeWald; and many nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be at R.W. Baker & Co. Funeral Home and Crematory, 509 W. Washington St., Suffolk, VA, on Thursday, October 10, 2024, at 12:00 PM.
A funeral service will be conducted by Pastor Burt Pearce on Thursday, October 10, 2024, at 1:00 PM, in the Chapel at R.W. Baker & Co. Funeral Home and Crematory.
Interment will be at Holly Lawn Cemetery following the service at 2:00 PM.
