Doris Rogers Deskins, 95, of Louisville, Kentucky, passed away peacefully on Sunday, August 17, 2025.
She is predeceased by her husband, Bill Deskins, her mother and father, Lela and Yale Rogers, and her sister, Janice Netherland.
Born in Barbourville, KY and raised in Wheelwright and Pikeville, Doris moved to Louisville in 1949 with her family and attended the University of Louisville. In 1950, she married her high school sweetheart. After spending a few years at various military bases, they returned to Louisville to start a family. In 1956, they moved into the house on Nadina Drive, where she became a fixture for nearly 70 years, watching cars go by and seeing generations of children grow.
Doris found her favorite scripture over the door of Highland Baptist Church-James 1:22, "Be ye doers of the word, not hearers only." She lived accordingly, serving her church and community her entire life. A master needleworker, she hand-crocheted waterproof sleeping mats for the unhoused, "Knitted Knockers" for women who underwent mastectomies, and sensory mitts for neurodivergent adults and children. She was instrumental in the establishment of the Bon Air Library, served as PTA president of Melbourne Heights Elementary and Seneca High School, and was an active member of the Meadow Heights Women's Club, where she served as its president. Doris was a member of St. Matthews Baptist Church for the last few years and was a founding member of Melbourne Heights Baptist Church. As a mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, she attended countless sporting events, competitions, and performances.
She is survived by her four sons, Danny (Betty), Randy (Pam), Lowell (Jeanie), and Roger (Daphne), and 21 grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Visitation will be held from 2 p.m. – 8 p.m. on Thursday at Ratterman & Sons Funeral Home 3800 Bardstown Road. Her funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday at St. Matthews Baptist Church 3515 Grandview Avenue.
Memorial gifts may be made to St. Matthews Baptist Church. To plant a beautiful memorial tree in memory of Doris, please visit our Tree Store.
