Doris Porter Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by McFarland Funeral Companies - Monroe from Jan. 19 to Jan. 21, 2026.
Doris Jean Porter was first born of nine children to the union of James Porter and Florida Mae Welch Porter.

Doris Jean excepted Christ at an early age. She was a member of the Zion Travelers Baptist Church.

She attended J. S. Clark Elementary School until 8th Grade and later graduated from Carroll High School with Honors with the class of 1966. For the next two years, she attended Grambling State University.

She was gifted with a little girl named Michelle Denise Porter. She moved to California for two years. Shortly after returning to Monroe, her father, James Porter, Sr., passed. In 1975, she moved her church membership to St. Mary Baptist Church, where she served on many auxiliaries. She was always willing to lend a helping hand to all that were in need. She assisted the elderly by providing rides to doctors appointments and home-cooked meals.

Her retail career started at JCPenney Department Store, located on Louisville Avenue and Pecanland Mall. Doris Jean received many awards recognizing her for her high performance in customer service and sales. In 2014 she retired from JCPenney as an assistant manager. After retirement, she often visit Baton Rouge to visit her Daughter and her family. But she adored traveling with her grandson's Jonathan and Dwight to New Orleans, Philadelphia, Atlanta, Houston, Florida, New York, and Colorado. She enjoyed her life. She created memories that will last forever. While at Ouachita Healthcare, God placed an angel there in room 305; a retired nurse and a former long-time customer of hers from JCPenney. Although she was retired, she still looked after my mom daily leaving her cookies at the nurse's station.

Doris Jean is survived by: her loving and devoted daughter, Michelle Martin (Dwight Sr.) of Baton Rouge, LA; grandsons, Jonathan Gray of Monroe, LA, and Dwight Martin II, Nashville, TN (Meharry School of Dentistry); brothers, Robert (Linda), Dennis Ray, Steven Randolph (Yvonne) of Monroe, LA, Eric Louis and Charles Ray, Baton Rouge, LA; sisters, Annette McGee of Inglewood, CA, and Patricia Moore (Donnye) of Monroe, LA; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
