Dorothy Wiede Obituary

Published by Legacy on Oct. 1, 2025.
Dorothy Marie Wiede was called to her eternal home on August 30, 2025. She was born in Reedville, Texas on December 15, 1928 to Harry Wiede Sr. and Lydia (Senff) Wiede. She joined her older brother, Harry Wiede Jr. and was followed by younger brother, George Wiede, She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran church. The family settled in San Marcos, Texas where her father had a tire and battery shop.
She would fondly talk about her childhood adventures that included walking for miles along the railroad tracks to visit friends. Her father would take her along when he went hunting and she would entertain herself by looking for unusual rocks and other treasures of God's creation. She and her brother George were frequently up to misadventures that kept their mother on her toes.
Her first job was "flipping burgers" for 25 cents an hour. When the restaurant burned down, she got a job at age 15 at the switchboard of the local telephone company. After graduating from San Marcos High School, she went to nursing school in Austin, Texas at Brackenridge Hospital School of Nursing. Having completed nursing school, she soon began her Civil Service career at Camp Gary in San Marcos. She then transferred to Wilford Hall Hospital at Lackland AFB in San Antonio. She said that at that time, Wilford Hall was just a series of barracks with no air conditioning.
Most of her Civil Service career was spent in the Newborn ICU and nursery. She saw many changes in that field during her 31 years with Civil Service. During that time she always had a second job on the side. After retiring from Civil Service, she continued to work in the nursing field in various hospitals and nursing homes. She was especially fond of working for the Sisters at St. Francis Nursing Home. In her 70's, she finally retired from the nursing profession.
Dorothy's brief marriage gave her the gift of her only child, Sylvia. In a time when divorce was rare, she bravely did what she had to do to keep herself and her daughter safe. She devoted her life to giving her daughter the world. She worked long hours to provide a comfortable home, a Christian education, and many earthly blessings for Sylvia. She showed her love for her daughter in many ways each and every day. Dorothy and Sylvia were fortunate that the Lord gave them so many years together.
Dorothy had a genuine love for people. She collected friends from every walk of life. She had friends from childhood, nursing school, work, gardening groups, church, the neighborhood, and even from a line in the grocery store. She lived life with an open hand and would freely share her blessing with others. When she no longer drove (1993 standard transmission Ford Ranger), she spent her days at home finding ways to help and encourage others by a phone call, a hand written note, a birthday or anniversary remembered, or an invitation to come to the house for a visit.
God's creation was very dear to Dorothy. She spent many happy hours in her yard among her plants. She would watch in eager anticipation for the poppies and irises to announce the arrival of spring. She would marvel at the intricate details of a flower and wonder how anyone could deny the Creator. She took great delight in any conversation having to do with plants and she took great joy in sharing cuttings, seeds, plants and her knowledge of gardening. She enjoyed the time she spent with her friends in various gardening organizations: San Antonio Rose Society, San Antonio Daylily Society, Master Gardeners, and Gardening Volunteers of South Texas.
Dorothy was proceeded to glory by her parents, Harry Sr. and Lydia (Senff) Wiede; her brothers and sisters-in-laws, Harry Jr. and Anna Mae Wiede, George and Wanda Wiede; niece, Patricia June (Wiede) Alldredge and nephew, Warren Wiede.
Those who remain to cherish her memory are her daughter and son-in-law Sylvia and Dan Tracy. Nieces and nephews and their spouses: Ronda Lantz (Rev. Earnest, deceased), James Wiede (Carolyn, deceased), Susan Patteson (Eugene), Debbie Wiede; numerous cousins, great nieces and nephews, great, great nieces and nephews and many precious friends.
