Douglas Gene "Doug" Hagenhoff, age 61, of Taos, Mo. passed away Sunday, July 16, 2023, at his home following a four-month battle with cancer.
He was born on September 16, 1961, in Jefferson City, Mo., the son of Victor Paul and Frances Marie (Reichel) Hagenhoff. Doug invited Sandy Kay Thompson to join him and some friends for an afternoon on the river and on the way home a hitch problem caused the boat to bounce loose from the vehicle. He lost the boat, but he got the girl and he and Sandy were married in Las Vegas, Nevada on March 20, 1990. Sandy survives in the home.
A lifelong resident of the Jefferson City area, Doug was a 1980 graduate of Jefferson City High School. Following graduation, he joined the Missouri Army National Guard and served 40 years until his retirement in 2020. In retirement, Doug accepted a position with the Department of Public Safety as a Security Officer at Ike Skelton Training Site. Throughout his career, he developed many lasting friendships that he dearly cherished. It seems that anyone affiliated with "The Guard" knew "Huggy", a nickname affectionately given to Doug.
In his free time, he enjoyed anything outdoors, whether it was cutting wood, hunting, working on food plots, spending time at the Phillips Farm in Belle, and living his best river rat life on the Osage River. Doug was a talented cook and loved preparing meals for his family and friends, his specialties were fried fish and anything on the grill. He was an avid Pittsburg Steelers fan from a young age, and as a boy he cherished time spent tagging along with his uncles. Doug loved to dance and was known for grabbing the hand of an unexpecting wallflower and pulling them onto the dance floor whether they knew how to dance or not. The pride and joy of Doug's life was his daughter, Brittany. His life's mission was to make sure she grew to love the outdoors as much as he did, teaching her to safely use firearms, drive a stick shift, operate a boat, hunt, and fish. Doug's sense of humor and straight forward attitude were his most well-known traits. He was selfless and made life more fun for everyone who knew him.
Survivors include: his wife, Sandy of Taos; daughter Dr. Brittany Hagenhoff (Shanna) of Columbia; two sisters, Vicki Phillips, and Marsha VanLoo (Bo) both of Taos; stepmother, Norma Hagenhoff of Jefferson City; stepsister, Doris Adams of Jefferson City; stepbrothers, Donald J. Kever (Betty) of Wardsville, Michael P. Kever (Julie) of St. Thomas, and Steve P. He was preceded in death by his parents, nephew, Taylor "TJ" McDaniel; brother-in-law, Jim Phillips; stepbrother, Gary Kever; uncles, Jim, Joe, and Larry Reichel; and step great niece, Hallie Phillips.
