Douglas P. Baird, Sr., 83, of Erie, passed away on Thursday, December 29, 2021. He was born in Erie on October 25, 1938, son of Charles N and Pauline (DiBacco) Baird.
He graduated in 1956 from Strong Vincent High School, and served in the USMC from 1956 to 1958. He was employed as a meat cutter at Kroger, Specialty Steak and Erie County Farms. He joined the Erie Fire Department in 1970, retiring at the rank of Captain in 2003.
He organized the MDA Boot Day with the Erie Fire Department for 14 years and was on the Muscular Dystrophy Board. He was asked to represent the IAFF at the national Jerry Lewis Telethon for his tireless efforts and contributions. He repaired toys for Gifts for Kids. He enjoyed woodworking, making full bedroom sets for all his children, gardening and fishing. He was well known for his cooking. People often commented that he should open a pizza shop because his sauce recipe was amazing.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 58 years Sharon (Spencer) Baird, his parents, his sister, Charlene Corritore and his godmother, Elsie Forsberg.
He is survived by his children, Douglas Baird, Jr., his partner, Charles Benchia of Boardman, Oh., Michelle Loiacono, her husband, Matthew of Williamsburg, Va., Lisa Baird of Erie, his grandchildren, Nicholas Porginski, Abigail Bartosek, her father Mark Bartosek, and Anna Loiacono, a sister Donna Skindell, her husband Jim, of Florida, a brother, Charles "Mike" Baird, his wife, Lane, of Erie, and many nieces and nephews.
Friends may call at the Brugger Funeral Home & Crematory, E. 38th St Branch, 845 E. 38 St. on Wednesday, January 5, 2022, 3:00-7:00 p.m., and are invited to attend a prayer service on Thursday, January 6, 2022 at 10:15 a.m. at the funeral home followed by a funeral service at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church at 11:00 a.m., with entombment at Mary Queen of Peace Cemetery.
