Obituary published on Legacy.com by Acres West Funeral Chapel and Crematory - West Odessa on Oct. 3, 2025.
We come together today to celebrate the remarkable life of Douglas D. Baker, a cherished man known to many simply as Douglas, and to those closest to him, affectionately as 'Granddad'. Born on March 24, 1945, in the warm heart of Paducah, Texas, Douglas's journey through life was one marked by service, creativity, and a profound generosity of spirit. He passed away peacefully on September 24, 2025, in
Odessa, Texas, leaving behind a legacy of love, laughter, and wisdom.
Douglas, a proud son of the late Bill and Ophelia (Weatherford) Baker, is remembered with deep affection by his son David and wife Kara, his daughters Marcy Bullard and DeeDee, alongside her husband Gary Dunda. His sister Joy Jackson, along with his adoring grandchildren-Alexus, Emily and Tim Baker, Amanda and Justin Chancey, Dustin and Prestin LaBorde, and Wrangler (Emily) Dunda-will hold dear the memories they shared. His great-grandchildren-Kali (Kenneth) Sledge, Grayson Sledge, Lucianna Jacobo, Camila Carrillo, Hunter and Kinley Chancey, Koby Green, Zoe Woolf, and Fawkes Dunda-will grow up hearing stories of his grandeur. Douglas was a loving figure to his son-in-law, Chris McMillan, and he was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Camille (Flinko) Baker, his daughter Shelly Butler, his brother Buddy Baker, and his sisters Eulema Clark and Debbie.
Douglas's life was one of dedicated service; he was a proud veteran of the US Navy, serving from 1962 to 1966. His bravery and commitment to his country were recognized with the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal (Viet Nam) and the National Service Defense Medal. Following his military service, he applied his disciplined work ethic and sharp intellect to a successful career as an engineer.
Yet, Douglas was so much more than his professional accomplishments. He was a man who never met a stranger and whose heart was as open as the Texas sky he grew up under. Douglas became 'Granddad' to everyone, not just by blood, but through his actions. He was a paragon of ingenuity, a man who could conjure solutions out of thin air and fix what seemed irreparable. His unofficial PhD in 'redneck engineering' was a testament to his inventive spirit, and his creative problem-solving was nothing short of legendary.
Friends and family alike will remember Douglas for his hands-on approach to life, his sharp wit, and his irresistible charm. He was a man who taught by doing, who found joy in the act of creation, and who could always be counted on for a sarcastic quip that would bring a smile to even the most solemn face. Douglas was the embodiment of selflessness; his door was always open, his tools ready for lending, and his advice freely given.
Words like sharp wit, sarcasm and charm only begin to scratch the surface of describing Douglas. He was a beacon of light in the lives he touched, a man whose love knew no bounds and whose presence was a source of comfort and joy. As we say goodbye to Douglas D. Baker, we do so with hearts full of gratitude for the time we shared with him, for the lessons he taught us, and for the laughter he brought into our lives. His influence will continue to ripple through the generations, a testament to the indelible mark he has left on our world. Douglas, our beloved 'Granddad', will be dearly missed, but his spirit will forever remain a guiding force in the lives of those he loved.
