Douglas Edward Broadbent, 65, a lifelong resident of Boulder City, suddenly passed away on January 11, 2024, from complications following heart surgery. His cherished wife and best friend, Carol Riddle Broadbent, was by his side when he took his last breath. His loss was unexpected, and his family is profoundly saddened.

Doug was born October 7, 1958, in Boulder City, Nevada, to Robert Nevin Broadbent and Marjie Sue Swarts Broadbent, the third of their four children. He had a joyful childhood in his beloved home of Boulder City and grew up loving Lake Mead and water skiing. He appreciated the beauty of the land where he was raised and was an expert lizard catcher who spent much of his boyhood free time exploring the desert. He enjoyed Boy Scouts and golf. He attended Boulder City Elementary and Boulder City High School (class of 1977).

Doug was a man with a natural spiritual capacity who loved his Savior Jesus Christ and tried to serve and love all his days to the best of his ability. He served a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Oxnard, California, where he strengthened his faith and developed a love for the Dodgers. Shortly after returning home from his mission, he met the lovely Carol Riddle and was smitten. He referred to her as the love of his life, and they married on December 29, 1981, in the St. George Temple. His heart surgery was on the day of their 42nd wedding anniversary.

Doug and Carol were a great team who worked together to build a business and a family. Doug established his American National Insurance business in Boulder City in 1984, and he worked hard for decades to help others as a caring and dedicated agent. He sponsored many youth sports teams and actively participated in the community. Doug and Carol became the parents of eight children and seven grandchildren. He loved traveling with Carol and the children, especially to the beach. His children were his life, and he loved supporting them in school and sports activities. He could be seen coaching their teams or cheering from the side of the pool, court, or field, spreading around the high-fives with his characteristic big smile on his face.

Doug had a huge, generous heart. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, son, brother, uncle, and friend. His love blessed the lives of too many to count. He dedicated years to teaching the youth of his church as a Sunday School and Seminary teacher, and he was well-loved by his students. He enjoyed many life-long friendships; whether an old or new friend, he loved you big. His and Carol’s generous hearts inspired them to become foster and adoptive parents.

Doug loved celebrating the 4th of July, and Boulder City has him to thank in large part for the tradition of the parade doubling as a giant water fight. He would always set up a cabana on the corner of 5th Street and Avenue B to watch the Damboree Parade. One year, he brought water guns to drench his children in the parade as part of the swim team. His sense of fun and mischief led him to get bigger water guns every year. Those around him couldn’t help but join the fun; the rest is history. He will be missed. We love you mucho, Doug!

Doug is survived by his wife Carol Broadbent and their children: Cortney Alvord (Bryce), Douglas Broadbent II (Ashleigh), Hailey Broadbent (Jahmaka), Jack Broadbent (Mahaylee), Joshua Broadbent, Jasmine Broadbent, Annie Broadbent, and Emmie Broadbent; by his grandchildren: Robert Alvord, Brady Alvord, Douglas Broadbent III (Trey), Mallory Broadbent, Madison Broadbent, Bella Broadbent, and Mikah Gray; by his siblings: Robert Broadbent (Helena), Kathleen Morris (Roy), and Michele Walker (Cam); by his siblings by marriage: Cheryl Clark (Thom), Scott Lewis, and Karen Smith (Robin); by many nieces, nephews, and cousins; and by friends Doug considered to be family (you know who you are). He is preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Sue Broadbent, and sister-in-law Toni Lewis.

Funeral services will be held at 12 noon on Saturday, January 20, at the Buchanan Chapel (1550 Buchanan Blvd.).
