Douglas Wayne Nelms

Fairfax, Virginia – Douglas Wayne Nelms, age 83, passed away peacefully on September 20, 2025, in Fairfax, Virginia.

Born in Lockney, Texas, to Lewis J. and Clara (Gunn) Nelms, Douglas' childhood was shaped by his father's Army career, which took the family to many corners of the United States and abroad. That sense of adventure led Douglas to follow in his father's footsteps when he enlisted in the U.S. Army after high school. He began his military service as a paratrooper. After attending flight school, he served as a rotorcraft (helicopter) pilot in Vietnam during the Vietnam War. Douglas carried with him both the honor of serving his country and was a Purple Heart recipient.

Following his service, Douglas pursued college studies in history, photography, and journalism having attended Oklahoma University, George Mason University and the University of Maryland. Those disciplines laid the foundation for a remarkable career in aviation journalism holding positions at British Aerospace, Fairchild Dornier, Air Transport World, and Rotor & Wing.

In 1987, Douglas married Susan (Lara) Nelms, with whom he shared nearly 32 years until her passing. With Susan came two stepchildren whom he embraced wholeheartedly, and they to him. His writing assignments took him, often with Susan, on journeys around the world. He frequently visited friends in the United Kingdom and Dubai, where he became a part of their family as well.

Douglas was a voracious reader, a committed Washington Commanders fan, a long-time golfer and woodworking hobbyist. He enjoyed a game of poker, folk music, a pint at the pub, a kind word, cooking for anyone, and trying the most bizarre dish on a menu.

He is survived by his nephew, two stepchildren, a son-in-law and two grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Susan (Bell) Nelms in 2018, his sister, Louise "Lou" (Nelms) Vance, earlier this year, and many dear friends.

Douglas will be remembered for his wit, incredible memory, and as a gentleman who embraced adventure, leaving a legacy of fond memories for those who knew him. A 'good ole lad', as he would say.

A visitation will be held on Sunday, October 5, 2025, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at Fairfax Memorial Funeral Home, 9902 Braddock Road, Fairfax, VA 22032. More details may be found at: Fairfax Memorial Funeral Home Obituary Page. Burial service is expected to be at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date to be determined.
