Douglas C. Post, LT.Col. (Ret.)
Douglas Claid Post, born July 17, 1943, passed away unexpectedly on November 3, 2025. Doug was born in Youngstown, Ohio, to Claid and Marjorie (Jewel) Post. He graduated from Canfield High School and continued his education at the University of Miami in Miami, Florida, and Youngstown State University.
Doug's studies were put on hold when duty called. He enlisted in the U.S. Army and was deployed to Vietnam, where he bravely served his country. Upon returning home, he completed his education and continued a lifetime of service (over 20 years) to his nation while working in the office furniture industry until his retirement. Throughout his life, Doug called many places home, including Canfield, Ohio; Rochester, New York;
Dansville, New York; and North Fort Myers, Florida.
Family was central to Doug's heart. He was the proud father of three daughters, whom he shared with their mother, Stephanie. Doug cherished every moment spent with his children and grandchildren. Pawley's Island, South Carolina, holds especially joyful memories for the Post family. He deeply valued staying involved in his family's lives, always watching over them and ensuring their well-being, even as they grew into adulthood.
For over twenty years, Doug shared his life with his beloved significant other, Sharilyn Shafer. Together they embraced a spirit of adventure, traveling across the country and around the world. They spent winters in North Fort Myers and summers in Rochester, building a life filled with companionship, shared experiences, and devotion. Though the later years brought physical challenges, Doug and Sharilyn faced them, caring for each other with love. Doug was preceded in death by his parents and his beloved nephew Mikey Post.
Doug is survived by his significant other, Sharilyn Shafer of Rochester, NY; his three daughters Julie Post-Smith (Matt) of Geneva, IL, Holly Wetherbee (Mike) of
Dansville, NY, and Heidi Kane (James) of Westerly, RI; and his brothers David Post (Susan) of Kennesaw, GA, and Robert Post (Sheri) of Monroe, GA. He leaves behind his cherished grandchildren, Emma and Nolan Smith; Sydney and Reid Martin; Mitchell and Sydney Wetherbee; and Sadie Kane. He is also survived by his nieces and nephews Christin (Chris) Post, Ryan Post, Jonathan (Sarah) Post, and Katy (Mat) Dyke. Doug held Sharilyn's family close to his heart as well, loving them as his own.
Doug will be remembered for his generosity, his quiet strength, and his devotion to family. His presence will be deeply missed, but the legacy he leaves, shaped by love, service, and loyalty, will remain forever in the hearts of those who knew him.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, December 6, 2025, at 10:00 a.m. at Sparta Center Church, 8455 Sparta Center Rd. (Route 256),
