Edward Decker Haak, Jr., age 84, of Asheboro, North Carolina died, Thursday, November 13, 2025, at Warm Hearth Village in Blacksburg, Virginia. He was born in Syracuse, New York, on September 10, 1941 to the late Edward and Jeanne Brainard Haak. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Bruce and Richard. Edward was the second in his high school graduating class behind his wife, Linda Plemons Haak, who also preceded him in death in 2018. They met at Manchester High School in Manchester, GA where they were both taught by Regina Pinkston, an Agnes Scott graduate. Ms. Pinkston influenced them heavily and they would continue to visit her even after they began their own family. Edward attended Purdue University where he obtained a chemical engineering degree and graduated Tau Beta Pi then continued on to medical school at the University of Virginia, where he graduated Alpha Omega Alpha. After his internship and residency where he became an Osler Fellow at Johns Hopkins University, he practiced medicine in North Carolina for the rest of his career. Most of that time, he was working with patients in Asheboro. Edward was a football player in high school and college, loved the outdoors and woodworking, was an avid collector (e.g., coins, clocks, watches and cameras), and a proud father of four children.
He is survived by his sisters, Nancy Jeanne Haak and Susan Haak Hinson and husband, Mark. He is also survived by his children, Edward Decker Haak, III and wife, Stormy (Laura); Jessica Haak Overton and husband, Mark; Laura Haak Marcial and husband, Frederick; David Collier Haak and wife, Patricia; grandchildren, Matthew, Sophia, Augustin, Sebastian, Samantha, and Isaac. A Memorial Service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the University of Virginia Alumni Annual Fund, https://www.uvamedalum.org/annual-fund.
