Duckett-Robinson Funeral Home - CentralStanely Hendrix Brumaghim, 86, passed away Sunday, October 26, 2025, in Clemson, SC.
Born in Derby Connecticut on May 24th, 1939, he was a son of the late Asel and Mary Beach Brumaghim. He grew up in Niantic, Connecticut with his two brothers, Art and Richard, and sister, Isabel. There he learned to play golf on a neighborhood course, a hobby that grew into a lifelong passion. Stanley received his undergraduate degree from the University of Connecticut with honors, and went on to earn his Ph.D. in Experimental Psychology from Purdue University with a concentration in perception.
While attending Purdue, Stanley met his future wife, Joan Thatcher. After graduation, he moved to Wichita, Kansas to begin his career as a human factors engineer with Boeing contributing to the design of airplane cockpits, the supersonic transport (SST), and the Lunar Roving Vehicle (LRV). He then furthered his career with a move to Rochester, New York to work at Xerox designing the human-copier interface. His work involved extensive travel to Japan, England, and the Netherlands to collaborate with Xerox’s overseas operations. Stanley continued to work and live in Rochester for many years until his retirement.
When Stanley wasn’t working, he loved to spend time with his family, playing and watching golf, and financial planning. He was the proud, loving father of his daughter, Julia, and his son, John (Jay). He taught his children by example since he was open-minded, respectful, disciplined, honest, and caring. His calm demeanor and great sense of humor made him a natural role model to his children and others. Stanley also contributed to the First Unitarian Church of Rochester as an active member. He even found time to fulfil his love of travel with trips to Hawaii, Europe, and around the US with his family.
After his retirement and divorce, Stanley moved to Inverness, Florida so he could play golf year round, and he did. He also continued his support for the Unitarian Universalist Association by joining the Nature Coast Unitarian Universalist Fellowship in Hernando, Florida where he was an active member for many years. In Florida, he met his long-time partner, Anna Tierney. He also continued seeing the world and appreciating its many cultures through trips to the Galapagos Islands, Scandinavia, Italy, Morocco, and Australia (among others).
After his Parkinson’s diagnosis, Stanley moved to Clemson, South Carolina to be closer to his daughter, Julia, and her family. He resided in the Clemson Downs retirement community and attended the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Clemson from time to time. He lived bravely and in good spirits with Parkinson’s for several years until his death.
Stanley is survived by his son, John “Jay” Brumaghim (Vanessa) of Rochester, NY and his daughter Julia Brumaghim (Modi) of Clemson, SC; his five granddaughters, Annabella, Luna, Valentina, Maya, and Talia; and his sister Isabel Terry of Maury, NC. His two brothers, Art and Richard, predeceased him.
A memorial service in honor of Stanley will be held on Saturday, November 29th at 11 am at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Clemson at 230 Pendleton Rd, Clemson, SC 29631. There will also be an opportunity to attend online if you are not able to attend in person.
