Edward J. Merendo, 76, of Vail Mills, NY passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Wednesday, November 12, 2025. Born in Amsterdam, NY on January 14, 1949 he was the son of the late Albert and Edith Knezich Merendo.

A lifelong area resident, Ed graduated from St. Mary's Institute. He went on to proudly serve our country as US Marine from 1966-1968 in the Vietnam War where he earned 3 Purple Hearts and 5 Service Ribbons. Following his return home, he started a roofing business with his family before he became a long term employee at Schenectady International now known as SI Group prior to retiring.

Ed was man of faith, and was a parishioner of St. Stanislaus Roman Catholic Church. He would also worship at St. James during the summer months while staying at the summer camp in Lake Pleasant. In his younger years, he was an avid fisherman who loved trolling for trout. He would get his daily limit by 9am and share them with others camping at Moffitt Beach or bring home for friends. Later in life, he traded his fishing rods for golf clubs and was a longtime member at Lake Pleasant Golf Course. When winter came he enjoyed bowling in the Men's City League for many years, rolling multiple perfect games. He also enjoyed snowmobiling and ice fishing on Lake Pleasant with his friends and family. Ed also was a 56 year member of the American Legion Post 337 and a life member at VFW Post 8690 in Broadalbin. Above all, Ed's favorite thing in the world was being an extremely proud husband, father and grandfather. He will be missed by all who knew and loved him.

He was predeceased by his son, David E. Merendo.

Survivors include his loving wife of 48 years, Susan Graff Merendo; his children, Kimberly Crandall (David) of Wasilla, AK, Tammy Capone (Mark) of Amsterdam, NY, Anthony Merendo (Amy) of Amsterdam, NY; his sister, Lucy Merendo; grandchildren, Samantha Gibson, Logan Crandall, Valentino and Mila Merendo; great grandchildren, Caleb Gibson and Harper Short; along with his many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

A private graveside service will take place in St. Mary's Cemetery, Fort Johnson.

Cremation arrangements have been entrusted to the care of Rose & Hughes Funeral Home.

Memorial contributions in his memory may be made to the VFW Memorial Post 8690, 19 Pine Street, Broadalbin, NY 12025, St. James Major Catholic Church, 2537 NY-8, Lake Pleasant, NY 12108, Church of St. Stanislaus 46 Cornell St. Amsterdam, NY or to any local animal shelter.
