Edward J. Schultz 7/24/39-7/28/23
Edward J Schultz of Freeville, NY passed away unexpectedly, but peacefully in his sleep on July 28,2023
in New Milford, CT. He was 84 years old. Ed was the only child of Martin J. and Helen (Shaver) Schultz.
In his early years, Ed served in the United States Army from 1961-1966 and was proud of his service to
his country. Ed proudly wore his US Army veteran hat later in life and was deeply touched by strangers
who would reach out and shake his hand and thank him for his service. He found many friendships from
these connections.
Ed had a lifelong love of cars, and raced at many local tracks over the years. He was a mechanic and a
welder by trade, and he enjoyed working on his cars and even building race cars from scrap. You could
frequently find him around junk yards and race cars. He held several classes of NYS Driver’s Licenses
and was a NYSDMV licensed motor vehicle inspector right up until his death. He was also an
outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting, fishing, boating and snowmobiling. Ed raised his children with the
same love of the outdoors.
Ed was employed by, and retired from, the International Union of Operating Engineers Local 158 where
he was recently honored in a ceremony for 55 years of membership, congratulating him for his longevity
and dedication and service.
He is survived by his daughter Suzanne (Glenn) Thorp; two sons: Brian Schultz of Syracuse NY, and Caleb
Schultz of New Milford, CT; and two grandchildren: Nicolas and Thomas Thorp. He was pre-deceased by
an adopted son, Jeffrey Schultz.
A private burial took place on August 3 rd , 2023 with Shurtleff Funeral Home handling the arrangements.
