Edward Bruce Thorn, 80, of Medford, NJ, passed away peacefully on December 7, 2024 at Brightview Mount Laurel. Edward Thorn was born on July 5, 1944 in Morrisville, PA to Edith Evelyn Thorn and Edward Walter Thorn.
Edward Thorn is survived by his sister Sandra Menschner, sons Adam (Genia) Thorn and Michael (Kelley) Thorn, grandchildren, Asher Thorn, Ian Thorn, Emma Thorn, and Addison Thorn, nephews Kenneth Balcolm, Barry Balcom, and niece Holly Taylor. He was predeceased by his spouse Gerald McKinley.
Edward "Ed" Thorn was born in Trenton, NJ, but grew up across the river in Morrisville PA. Ed graduated from Juniata College with a B.A. in History and Political Science. Upon graduation he trained at the University of Texas to teach English as a foreign language as part of the Peace Corps in Iran. Per request of the Iranian Ministry of Education, Ed taught English throughout the late 60's to students of all ages, primarily in the city of Shiraz. Upon his return to the states, he worked as a special education teacher at The Woods School in Langhorne, PA. Ed obtained a post graduate M.Ed. degree in special education from Temple University in 1984. He worked the remainder of his career at the Valley Day School in Morrisville, PA. Ed received Elementary and Secondary Principal Certifications from The College of New Jersey and retired as a lead administrator at the school.
Ed had diverse interests and hobbies. He was an avid reader and enjoyed everything from, learning about the English and Russian royal families, to the harrowing tales of the sinking of the Titanic, to a good old fashion mystery novel. Ed had an affinity for history and spent many years researching his ancestral lineage and developing his Family Tree. He was so dedicated he traced the family line back to when the U.S. was first colonized and even extended the search across the ocean. Ed enjoyed gardening and being outdoors. He was particularly delighted in taking trips to Long Beach Island and Barnegat Lighthouse. Above all though, Ed cherished the time spent with family and friends. He will be deeply missed but never forgotten, as his love and memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
At the request of the family, funeral services will be private.
All arrangements are under the care and direction of the Mathis Funeral Home, Medford, NJ.

I met Ed through Jeffrey Shorn my late husband who was also a Peace Corps volunteer in Iran. It seems Jeffrey´s mail would sometimes arrive at Ed´s place in Shiraz. I guess Shorn and Thorn was a bit similar to the Iranian post office. After Jeffrey passed, Ed would call periodically and shared stories . We did meet in person in. Chicago in 2023 at a reunion of those PC volunteers who served in Iran. Very sweet man who graced us with his presence.
