Edward Van Wert, 94, resident of the independent living community of Country Meadows, passed away on November 22, 2024, after a brief hospital stay. He was the beloved husband of the late Ann (Ross) Van Wert, until her passing on May 17, 2019. They shared 50 years of love, laughter and wonderful memories.
Born in Troy, New York, Edward was the son of the late Wellington "Ed" and Joan (Dwulitt) Van Wert. Edward graduated from RPI with a degree in Electrical Engineering. Edward was a proud Navy veteran serving during the Korean War.
There are three words to describe Papa Ed: faith, family and fun.
He was an active member of First United Church of Christ in Hamburg, a man of strong faith.
He will be remembered for his sense of humor, and the love he showed his family and friends.
At 82 he wrote a book "Looking Back" – capturing experiences of his life and showcasing his hobbies/talents. A few include his musical ability to play many instruments, crafting and tinkering (from replica ship making to cigar box guitars), he also enjoyed fishing, boating and waterskiing and even won medals for swimming.
He enjoyed traveling, and lived in many different parts of the US, and Canada. You name a country, he had (probably) been there. During those years, he did a variety of other jobs outside his career - including a police officer/plain clothes detective, a pilot, a personal chauffeur, and he and Ann even did a stint in advertising and marketing for the circus.
Papa Ed's memory will be cherished by his blended family of children: Joan, David, Lori, Kevin, Bob, Debbie, Roy, Kim and Ann Marie; and 21 grandchildren, growing number of great grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren + all the children's spouses, extended family and many friends.. In addition to his parents, and his wife, Ann, he is predeceased by his first wife, Marge; his son, David; and a grandson, Jeremiah.
A Celebration of Edward's life will be held at a later date (Spring 2025). In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to 1st United Church of Christ at 76 S 3rd St, Hamburg, PA 19526.
Kuhn Funeral Home and Crematory, Hamburg, is honored to serve Edward's family. Condolences may be expressed at kuhnfuneralhomes.com.
