RICHMOND, IN– Edwin Everett White passed away at the age of 95 on June 11, 2025 in Richmond, Indiana.
Edwin was born to Robert William White and Luella Garner White in Richmond, Indiana on April 23, 1930, a short time ahead of his twin sister Esther. He graduated from Richmond High School in 1948 and began studies at Earlham College. There he met his future wife, Jocelyn Newell. A lifelong member of West Richmond Friends (Quaker) Meeting and a believer in nonviolence, Ed refused to report for induction into military service and served eight months in prison as a consequence of following his deeply-held convictions. When he was later reclassified as a conscientious objector, he performed alternative service as a payroll clerk at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis. Ed and Jocelyn were married August 14, 1955, at Stony Run Friends Meeting in Baltimore, Maryland, under the care of West Richmond Friends Meeting. At the end of Ed's alternative service, the couple and their newborn daughter moved to Richmond where Ed worked for the Insurance Company of North America. To accommodate a growing family of four children, he purchased a memorably large canvas wall tent for camping adventures and, over the years, a memorable series of Volkswagen vans to transport the family.
In 1965 Ed agreed to take on a four-year mission term at a Quaker mission in western Kenya, where he served as financial advisor for East Africa Yearly Meeting, and Jocelyn provided support to the mission hospital. Upon the family's return to the US in 1969, they moved to LaPorte, Indiana, where Ed and Jocelyn attended the Church of the Brethren. He continued accounting work, including 19 years with an advertising company in South Bend. Retirement gave Ed a chance to take up an interest in an antique glass collection inherited from Jocelyn's family. Visiting antique shops and glass museums gave them an opportunity to travel, as did sharing in birthdays, graduations, and other life events of their children and grandchildren.
Ed and Jocelyn moved back to Richmond in 2009 to reside at Friends Fellowship Community where they renewed connections with old friends, especially those from West Richmond Friends Meeting. He often served on the Meeting's finance committee, of which he was a member at the time of his death. Ed served as treasurer for First Friends Meeting for a number of years, finally giving up that work when he was past his 90th birthday. At Friends Fellowship he was known for performing the daily task of preparing newspapers for display in the reading room. He also served for a time as treasurer for the Executive Committee at Friends Fellowship.
Ed was known for his quiet ways and for his faithful attention to any service he took on. He enjoyed solving "cryptoquotes" on his computer, watching sports on TV (including his favorite Cincinnati Reds), listening to music, reading mystery novels, and watching his family grow and thrive.
Edwin is survived by daughters, Sarah (Noel) Pavlovic of Chesterton, Indiana, and Mary Price of Bennett, Colorado; sons, Andrew (Diane) White of Winston-Salem, North Carolina, and David White of Hobart, Indiana; grandchildren Benjamin White of Austin, Texas, Matthew (Nina) White, of Broad Run, Virginia, Janna (Edward) Johnson of Austin, Texas, Nathan (Emma Quilligan) Pavlovic of Washington, D.C., Colby (Sophia) Youngren of Great Falls, Montana, Emily (Sean Smith) Pavlovic of Duluth, Minnesota, Mallory Price of Denver, Colorado; and seven great-grandchildren.
Edwin was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 67 years Jocelyn Newell White; parents, Robert and Luella White; brother Stanley (and Madalene) White; twin sister Esther (James) Sunderland; son-in-law Brett Price; and daughter-in-law Debera Mitchem White.
