Publish in a newspaper

John Lytle Winters Jr., 93, of Avon, passed away Tuesday, August 19th, 2025. He was born November 15th, 1931 in Indianapolis to his parents John Lytle Winters Sr. and Martha Margaret (Wooden) Winters. He married Mary Louise (Bastin) Winters on November 7th, 1959, and the two spent nearly 66 beautiful years together.

John is survived by his wife, Mary Winters of Avon; three children: Jeffrey Winters (Serena) of Brooklyn, New York, John Winters (Barbara) of Beech Grove, and Mary Winters-Guernsey (Charles) of Brownsburg; and six grandchildren: William, Darthea, Matthew, Elijah, John, and Daniel.

John is preceded in death by both of his parents and two sisters: Lois Bower and Phyllis Wiggins.

John, a proud graduate of Decatur Central High School in 1948, went on to earn his bachelor's degree in Biology from Earlham College in Richmond. His service in the United States Army, culminating in his discharge in 1962, laid the foundation for a distinguished career. He started as a Stream Biologist for the Indiana State Board of Health and, after 42 years of dedicated work, retired as the Branch Chief of Water Quality for the Department of Environmental Management in 1998.

A devoted member of the Friends of White River Organization and a volunteer for Project Healing Hands, John embodied a spirit of community service. His love for nature shone through in his passions for fishing and camping, and his interest in history inspired those around him. As a dedicated coach for football and basketball, he motivated young athletes to reach their potential. An enthusiastic fan of Indiana University sports and the Chicago Bears, he shared his love for sports with family and friends. He was a strong, loving and loyal man to his wife, kids and grandkids.

Family and friends may show their love and support from 12 to 1 pm on Monday, August 25th at Jones Family Funeral and Cremation Service in Mooresville. A celebration of life service will be held at 1 pm following visitation at the funeral home. John will be laid to rest at West Newton Cemetery in West Newton.
