Elaine Rebecca (Rustad) Wessel, age 78, of Rollingstone, MN, died Wednesday, June 4, 2025 at Mayo Clinic Health System in La Crosse, WI.
Elaine was born April 13, 1947, in Rushford, MN, the daughter of Raymond and Edna (Overby) Rustad. She grew up on the family farm in Bratsberg, MN. After graduating from Rushford High School, she went on to attend Winona Secretarial School. Elaine worked for Merchants Bank for many years. She also owned and operated Schell’s Grocery and Cafe in Rollingstone, MN. She then went on to work for Wunderlich Insurance, Winona Clinic, and Mayo Clinic in Rochester. After retirement she volunteered at Winona Health, and Rollingstone Community School.
Elaine was united in marriage to William Schell, and to this union 2 children were born, Jennifer and Terrance. The couple later divorced. Later, she met Richard Wessel, and the couple was married in 1988, also adding Kimberly to the family as a step-daughter. Richard and Elaine enjoyed traveling, golfing, trips to the casino, and going for drives, often taking Richard’s “short cuts.” They were active members at the KC Club and the Elks. She was an avid sports fan, and enjoyed puzzles, diamond painting, and reading. Elaine loved spending time with her family, and attending all the activities of her children and grandchildren.
She is survived by her children: Jennifer (Corey) Stephans of Eyota, MN, Terrance (Shannon) Schell of Rochester, MN, and Kimberly (Kevin) Ring of Charlotte, NC; grandchildren: Tyler, and Tarrin Stephans, Elliot, Isaac, and Easton Schell; brother, Gary (Nancy) Rustad of Rushford; as well as many cousins and nieces and nephews; and beloved grand-dogs: Myla, Leah, Margo, Koda, and Wally the parrot.
Elaine is preceded in death by her parents; and husband, Richard.
A memorial service will be held Thursday, June 12, 2025 at 3:00pm at Hoff Celebration of Life Center in Winona. Visitation will be from 1:00 - 3:00pm at the funeral home prior to the service.
