Eleanor Eunice Keene, 80, of Hortonville, NY, died on Saturday, January 11, 2025 at Wayne Memorial Hospital. She is survived by her companion of 53 years, Anna Marie Cancelli.
Born on November 20, 1944 in Newburgh, NY, she was the daughter of the late Harold and Eleanor Elizabeth (Mac Nary) Keene.
Eleanor was a talented artist and would sell her art up and down the east coast, from Virginia to Maine. She and Anna settled in Virginia for several years working in a gift shop and as a housekeeper at a Quality Inn. While in Virginia, she was an EMT for Shenandoah Shores Volunteer Fire Department.
After moving to Hortonville, Eleanor began working for Fallsburg Area School District as a custodian. After 17 years, she retired. She was a volunteer Auxiliary Police Officer in Middletown, NY. In the spirit of helping others, she would volunteer to teach others to read in remedial classes.
At home, she continued working on her art, sewing and crocheting. An avid reader and faithful person, she read the bible and prayed for family and friends daily. Most of all, Eleanor enjoyed her trips to Maine with Anna where they made lasting memories together.
A special thank you to Pastor Shannon Bailey, for her love and pastoral support. Eleanor and Anna are forever grateful for the help and friendships from Mark Spina (who Eleanor considered as a brother) of Yankee Lake, NY and Dr. Linda Borrelli of Abrahamsville, PA. She is also survived by many cousins and friends.
She was preceded in death by her brother, Harold Keene Jr.
As per her request, there will be no funeral services. Cremation arrangements by Hessling Murray Funeral Home, 428 Main St. Honesdale.
