Elizabeth Louise "Betty Lou" Getz (Stahl), a woman whose life was defined by love and an unwavering dedication to others, passed away peacefully on November 1, 2025, in Chambersburg, Pennsylvania, with her beloved husband, Frank Getz, by her side. She was 80 years old.
Born on July 1, 1945, in Jersey City, New Jersey, Betty was raised in a close-knit family environment that instilled in her a strong sense of community. After graduating from Central Business College, she embarked on a professional life marked by diligence and warmth.
In a storybook beginning to a lasting romance, Betty met Frank Getz, the love of her life, on a Greyhound bus traveling from Harrisburg to Bloomsburg, Pennsylvania, in 1965. They married on March 3, 1968, and would go on to share 57 cherished years together. After their marriage, the couple settled in Norfolk, Virginia, and welcomed their only son, Brian Getz, on August 8, 1969, in East Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania.
Betty's professional journey began as a secretary for Phillip Fail Insurance, where she worked from 1970 to 1987. Her warm demeanor and keen attention to detail made her an invaluable member of the team. Following a move to the DMV area, she served as a supervisor at JCPenney's in Alexandria, Virginia, until her retirement in 1999. Prior to the move, she had also dedicated time to volunteering at Messiah Lutheran Church.
Retirement only amplified her deep commitment to service. For over two decades, she was a familiar and encouraging volunteer in the classrooms of Potomac Heights Elementary School. She supported countless students, teachers, and staff who all lovingly knew her as "Grammy Getz". Her generous spirit extended to the American Legion Unit 42 Morris Frock, where she served on both the executive and education committees. Betty championed numerous causes, notably organizing the food pantry and coordinating the donation of over 1,000 winter coats for the Children and Youth of Washington County, Maryland. For Betty, volunteering was an integral part of who she was.
A devoted wife, mother, and grandmother, Betty's greatest joy was her family. She is survived by her devoted husband, Frank F. Getz, and her son, Brian D. Getz. She was the proud and loving grandmother of Emily P. Getz (Kelsey M. Impink), Alyssa J. Getz, and her name-sake, Katie Elizabeth Getz. Betty took immense pride in watching her granddaughters flourish into successful young women, celebrating all of their accomplishments as their biggest fan.
Her hobbies, which included reading and crocheting gifts for others, reflected her generous and caring nature. Those who knew her will remember Betty as loving, kind, and always ready to lend a helping hand to anyone in need.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Laura G. Stahl, and her brother, Robert Stahl.
A viewing will be held at Douglas Fiery Funeral Home in
Hagerstown, Maryland on Thursday, November 6th, from 4:00 pm - 6:00 pm.
Betty will be interred beside her mother at Rose Hill Cemetery in Bloomsburg, Pennsylvania in a private family service.
May her memory bring comfort to all who knew and loved her.
