Durham, North Carolina -- Elizabeth Hopkins Heinmiller, 96, went to be with the Lord on March 30, 2023 from her home in the Forest at Duke.
Liz was born in Tampa, Florida to Dr. William Benjamin Hopkins and Mary Nicholson Hopkins. She married physicist Charles Samuel Heinmiller in 1951 and they lived in Rochester, New York until 1989 when she and Charles retired to Chapel Hill, NC. Liz was proud of her family connections to UNC: her husband, her daughter, and her grandson all graduated from UNC at Chapel Hill. Elizabeth is survived by two daughters, Nancy Heinmiller McInnes (Ron McInnes) and Mary Gene Heinmiller Hennessy (Kevin Hennessy) and by one grandchild, Aidan Conrad Hennessy.
Elizabeth graduated from Randolph Macon Women's College in Virginia where she was a member of Kappa Delta Sorority. Liz taught first grade in Tampa before her marriage. Always a great advocate of reading, she was the "Story Lady" at her library for over 20 years. Liz was active in her church, her community, and the Junior League.
Liz always had a warm smile for everyone, and she was filled with laughter and joy. She was a long-time evangelical Christian who prayed and read God's word daily. Liz both attended and led Bible studies through the years and was always involved with the life of her church.
Elizabeth said that being a wife and a mother were the greatest joys of her life. She loved to sing when Charles played the piano for her at home. Starting with dance lessons as a young child, Liz enjoyed dancing all her life. She was a seamstress who made everything from her children's clothes to Christmas tree ornaments. Liz loved tennis with a passion and was pleased to be able to play until she was in her 70s.
A memorial service will be held at 1pm on Saturday, April 22nd at Church of the Good Shepherd in Durham. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate your donation to Doctors Without Borders or Durham Rescue Mission https://donate.doctorswithoutborders.org/secure/donate

I will always remember how kind Liz was to me when I lived in Rochester and didn't know anyone there. She prayed with me and encouraged me in so many ways to live a Godly and beautiful life.
