Ellen Verdia Wheeler

Ellen Verdia Joseph Wheeler, a devoted wife, beloved mother, loving grandmother, and great grandmother, peacefully entered into eternal rest on November 1, 2025, at the age of 90. She was born on September 19, 1935, in Dupont, LA, to the late Irvin Joseph and Florida Paul Joseph. She married Melvin Wheeler to whom she was married to for 65 years and resided in New Orleans. The result of their union was six children – Melba Harris (Gary), Mary Wheeler, Netsy Wheeler, Karen Williams, Joseph Wheeler Sr., and Michael Wheeler Sr. (Michelle). Ellen was also blessed with 10 grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren, and a host of nieces and nephews. Her memory will also be cherished by one brother, Alvin Joseph Sr. (Lena). Ellen is preceded in death by her husband Melvin Wheeler, parents Irvin Joseph and Florida Paul Joseph, one daughter, Mary Wheeler, and two sisters, Gracie Belone and Mary Frank She had many talents. Among them were cooking, sewing, and being hospitable to all who crossed her threshold. She was known for her German chocolate cakes, pecan candy, and gumbo. She demonstrated her sewing skills by making her daughters' school clothes, their prom dresses, suits for Melvin, and even leisure suits for the boys. Being an impeccable hostess, who never met a stranger, she always offered her guests something to eat and drink, accompanied by some memorable conversation. Ellen's greatest happiness was derived from family. She was always the "Queen Bee" and doted on her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. Even though she did not complete high school, she knew and stressed the importance of education. All of her children have college degrees, and so do many of her grandchildren. She was a Christian woman who believed in God. She took pleasure in daily reciting the Rosary and watching the mass on television.
