Elsie Schneider Obituary
Obituary published on Legacy.com by Cavanagh-Patterson Family Funeral Home - Media on Mar. 31, 2026.
Elsie Christine Schneider, a longtime Aston resident whose remarkable life spanned nearly a century, died peacefully on March 18, 2026, at Riddle Memorial Hospital. She was surrounded by loving family, with her devoted sister, Nicki Schneider, holding her hand.
A proud cancer survivor, Elsie often expressed surprise and gratitude at reaching a milestone age. Her 99th birthday on Nov. 4, 2025, was a joyful celebration at Ashley's Restaurant & Bar with family. Born in Philadelphia and raised in Norwood, she was the daughter of the late Charles F. and Elsie B. (Fricke) Schneider. She was especially proud to share her name with her beloved mother.
A resident of Aston since 1977, Elsie was a member of Aston Senior Citizens and St. Joseph Catholic Church over the years. She enjoyed many summers in Maryland, at a cottage in Crystal Beach as a young girl, and later, at Buttonwood Beach. Elsie was known for her generosity, fun-loving spirit, and vibrant personality. While her manner was soft and effortless, she was never shy about sharing her opinions. She was also strong-willed; as a young girl, she famously refused to make her side of a double bed, insisting she always had "better" things to do with her time, as Nicki fondly recalled.
As the second-oldest of five siblings and the firstborn daughter, Elsie naturally became a second mother to her younger sister and brothers. Her nurturing and generous spirit extended beyond her immediate family; she and Nicki welcomed an exchange student from Japan, Terumi, into their home. Terumi became like a daughter to them, and their close bond endured for many years.
A 1944 graduate of Glen-Nor High School, Elsie excelled in typing and commercial shorthand. According to her yearbook, she was also known for her enthusiastic cheering at football games and many other superlative qualities.
Elsie went on to have a distinguished 41-year career as an executive secretary at Westinghouse Electric Co., becoming one of the last employees to leave when the Lester plant closed in 1986. Her retirement was celebrated with a grand party at the old Concordville Inn. Later, she served as a school crossing guard for the Penn-Delco School District, faithfully manning her posts outside the Northley Middle and Pennell Elementary schools for nearly a decade.
Elsie always loved a good party and hosted many gatherings at her home in Aston. One of her saddest days came when it was time to fill in the backyard pool. She rarely turned down a trip to the casino, counting her winnings among her favorite pastimes. She loved crossword puzzles, had a gift for spelling, and often served as Nicki's personal dictionary.
In her younger years, Elsie enjoyed roller skating at the Great Leopard in Chester. Even then, as an accomplished seamstress, she would often begin marking out a new skirt early Saturday morning just to wear it skating that evening. As an adult, her love for cross stitch and embroidery led her to create beautiful tablecloths, worthy of family heirlooms.
In recent years, Mondays were reserved for lunch outings and card games, rotating houses with her friends and always scoring more laughs than nickels from countless hands of Pay Me or Hand & Foot. If there was a dog in the house, she would arrive with a treat in her pocket, claiming it was from Mandi, her beloved Chihuahua-pug. On Fridays, Elsie had a standing appointment with her hairdresser-a special treat she enjoyed for most of her life.
Elsie held a special affection for Easter, which she celebrated by gathering family together at Urban Avenue in Norwood. Typically an infrequent cook, she proudly honored her German roots by preparing Kartoffelklosse (potato dumplings) and Sauerbraten (beef) at Christmas. She enjoyed traveling-always by car-and visited destinations as far as South Carolina, California, and Colorado.
In addition to her parents, Elsie was preceded in death by her brothers Charles F. Schneider and August H. Schneider, and a dear niece by marriage, Tara Schneider.
She is survived by one sister, Naomi "Nicki" Schneider, with whom she made her home; a brother, Joseph A. Schneider; nieces and nephews, Charles F. Schneider (Donna), Jeanne L. Berlin (Donald), Anne M. Brletich (Joseph), Marie F. Schneider, Lynn M. Gevik, Jon C. Schneider (Robin), Susan C. McCollough (Richard), Steven A. Schneider and Scott A. Schneider (Margie); and many great – and great-great nieces and nephews.
A private viewing was held on March 20 at Cavanagh Family Funeral Home in Media.
A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday, April 10, at SS. Peter & Paul Cemetery, 1600 Sproul Road, Springfield, 19064. Attendees should gather by 12:45 pm in the designated parking area in front of the main entrance chapel.
