With profound sadness, we announce the passing of Eric Patrick Barnard, a beloved son, brother, father, husband, and friend. Eric departed this world unexpectedly on March 24, leaving behind a void that can never be filled.
Born on May 11, 1973, Eric lived a life of generosity and unwavering commitment to his loved ones and his community. He was a man of kindness and character whose sense of humor lit up every room he entered. His infectious laughter and warm smile were a source of comfort and joy to all who knew him.
Eric was a dedicated son and brother who deeply admired his mother and father's example of family devotion. Eric followed his father's choice of profession and went into law enforcement as a police officer for the California Highway Patrol. Upon graduating from the CHP Academy in 1995, Eric was assigned to the Santa Fe Springs area until December 1998, when he transferred to the Capistrano Area, working with his father until his father's retirement.
Making his father, whom he idolized, proud greatly pleased Eric. Professionally, Eric excelled as a K-9 Officer, Field Training Officer, Area Representative, and Drug Recognition Officer. In addition to his assignments, Eric was a mentor and friend to countless members of the department. His compassion, expertise, and dedication earned him the respect and admiration of colleagues. Eric retired in May of 2023 after serving his community for 28 years and 3 months. He approached every professional task with sensitivity and integrity, leaving a lasting impression on all who worked alongside him. Eric's steadfast commitment to his brothers and sisters at the CHP and to his community has left a legacy that will not be forgotten.
Beyond his professional achievements, Eric was known for his selflessness and willingness to lend a helping hand to those in need. Whether through small acts of kindness or larger gestures of generosity, he touched the lives of countless family members, friends, and even strangers, making a positive impact on everyone he met. Eric regularly shared his winnings with workers at the track and casinos. He spent time with the homeless, distributing shoes to many people, often looking out for them while he patrolled, concerned for their safety. Eric had a distinct gift for connecting with people, and he valued his relationships, keeping in contact with so many dear friends throughout the years.
In his leisure time, Eric enjoyed watching sports, collecting memorabilia, and cooking. He loved entertaining and could often be found barbequing huge meals for family and friends. Eric found immense joy in the simple pleasures of life. However, Eric's family was his greatest treasure. He cherished holiday traditions, especially his annual reading of The Night Before Christmas and the family goofy ornament exchange at Christmas. Celebrating our freedom on the Fourth of July will not be the same because Eric's profound patriotism annually made the day a special event. Every moment spent with his four daughters animated Eric. He passionately supported all of them in their endeavors. For his angel, Emily, he sweetly fashioned a spoken voice for her that Rett Syndrome robbed. Through his voice, he and Emily would have hilarious conversations he would video and later post for all his family to cherish.
Eric is survived by his daughters Breanna, Cori, Emily, and Brooklyn; his wife Shayne; his mother Margaret; his brother David and his wife Amy and their children Ella and Reeves; his sister Tammy and her husband Bill and their children Wyatt, Grace, and Maggie; his brother-in-law Scott and his children Brennan and Amanda. Eric was predeceased by his father, Patrick, and twin grandchildren, Leonardo and Lucille Eckenrode.
Eric's untimely departure has left a deep chasm, but his memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him. He will be dearly missed and forever remembered for his love, his laughter, his thoughtfulness, and his unwavering spirit.
A public burial and celebration of Eric's life will be held on April 12 at Ascension Cemetery and The Hills Hotel in Laguna Hills, where friends and family will gather to honor his memory and share stories of the profound impact he had on their lives. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the International Rett Syndrome Foundation: https://www.rettsyndrome.org, in honor of his remarkable daughter Emily and Eric's legacy of compassion and generosity.
May Eric Patrick Barnard rest in eternal peace, knowing that he was cherished and loved beyond measure.

He bought sports cards from me online every so often. He was always a pleasure to be around. His personality was something every man should have. Truely honorable man. He will be missed!

Unfortunately, I never had the chance to meet this man. I read his obituary and now I´m here. Eric sounds like he was a great guy. A guy who loved his family and friend and who had compassion for people in general. To hi family I wish them comfort knowing he is with the lord and he is free from pain. I´m sorry for your loss. RIP Eric. God bless you all.
