Jean Preston Barry, 94, of Orange County, California, passed away peacefully on August 7, 2025. Jean lived a life that spanned continents, friendships, and generations. Born on March 25, 1931, in St. Helens, Lancashire, England, to Thomas and Martha Preston, Jean grew up alongside her beloved sister, Dorothy.
In 1950, she married Russel Wessels, and together they began a journey as an Air Force family, raising their three daughters - Rita, Donna, and Susan - while moving from base to base around the world. Wherever she went, Jean made a home filled with laughter, community, and support for her fellow military families.
Jean later met the love of her life, Richard Barry, and in 1977 they were married in Orange, California. With their marriage, she welcomed two stepdaughters, Teri and Yvonne, into her heart and family.
Jean was never one to sit still for long. She volunteered for Orange County elections for many years, kept her garden blooming year-round, and was famous for holiday parties where everyone was welcome. Her adventurous spirit shone brightest during her extensive world travels with her dear friend Eleanor.
But above all, Jean's proudest role was "Nanny." Her 10 grandchildren and 14 great- grandchildren were her greatest joy, and her love for them was boundless. Jean continued her travels and made great effort to attend major events in their lives despite being spread across the country.
Jean was preceded in death by her daughter Rita; her parents Thomas and Martha Preston; her sister Dorothy Preston Ferrari; her first husband, Russel Wessels; her second husband, Richard Barry; and her dear friend Eleanor. She is survived by her daughters Donna and Susan; her stepdaughters Teri and Yvonne; her 10 grandchildren; and her 14 great- grandchildren.
Jean's life was a tapestry of devotion, adventure, and love - a legacy that will continue to blossom in every garden she planted and every heart she touched.
