Erma Jean Callis, age 92, of Clarksville, Indiana, passed away on Friday, January 3, 2025 at Baptist Floyd County Hospital in New Albany, Indiana. Born January 11, 1932 in Spencer County, Indiana, she was the daughter of William Frank and Lucy A. (Bence) Tuley.
Mrs. Callis was a graduate of Jeffersonville High School in Jeffersonville, Indiana, IVY Tech Community College of Indiana in Sellersburg with a degree in nursing in 1982, and attended the University of Louisville. She worked in doctors' offices, hospitals, and retired as the administrator of a health care facility in Florida where she lived for thirty-six years.
In addition to her nursing, Mrs. Callis did a variety of jobs ranging from bookkeeping to account executive. She and her husband owned and operated a travel and trailer business, and she owned a ceramic business where she gave lessons.
Mrs. Callis was a member of the Clarksville Garden Club, several camping clubs, and a hospital volunteer. She was a gourmet cook and caterer, seamstress, ballroom dancer, accomplished in many of the arts including stained glass, and entertained on stage with comedy. She also received a yellow belt in Taekwondo.
Her surviving family includes two daughters and sons-in-law: Deborah and Keith Hennessy of Borden, Indiana, and Deena and Trent Alexander of Columbia, Tennessee; one son and daughter-in-law, Deron and Ann Callis of Memphis, Indiana; and two grandchildren: Kasie Stemle and her husband, Matthew of New Albany, Indiana and Kegan Hennessey and his partner Allison Fleitz of Henryville, Indiana.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Delbert Callis on August 23, 2016; one brother and one sister.
On a future date that will be announced, Mr. and Mrs. Callis's cremated remains will be buried at a graveside service in Bedford Cemetery.
