Estelle Clay Hodges of Nathalie passed away on November 12 surrounded by her family. She was born in Halifax County on November 14, 1934 to the late Herman and Ada Clay. She was married to the late Alvin Gray Hodges, Sr.
She was a member of Catawba Baptist Church where she was a member of the choir and taught Sunday School. Estelle took great pride in everything she did. Her dedication and work ethic were evident throughout her career as an employee to Hardee’s for eighteen years and for ten years as a bus driver for the Halifax County Public School System. Her passing will leave a void in her family as well as to all who knew her.
Left to cherish her memory are her children, Ann Clay (Phillip) of Red House, VA, Delma Wilson (James) of Amelia, VA, Alvin Hodges, Jr. (Shirley) of Nathalie, Lennie Layne (Johnny Layne, Sr.) of Nathalie, William Hodges (Deanna) of Palm Coast, FL and Wanda Crews of South Boston; Thirteen grandchildren; twenty-seven great grandchildren; two great great grandchildren; one sister, Corine Myers of South Boston. She was preceded in death by a great grandchild, Aaron Kenneth Chandler, Jr; her siblings, Pat Clay, Lillian Crews, Bobby Clay, Ernest Clay, Floyd Clay, Stuart Clay, Bonnie McKinney, and Sterling Ingram.
A graveside service will be held on Friday, November 14, 2025 at 11:00 A.M. at Catawba Baptist Church with the Rev. James A. Wilson, Jr. and Rev. Michael O’Shea officiating.
The family will receive friends on Friday, one hour prior to the service in the church and other times at 1071 Nathalie Rd., Nathalie.
