EUGENE LUMPKIN JR. was born Wednesday, April 3, 1946, in Vallejo, California. He was the son of Eugene Lumpkin, Sr. and Carrie Lumpkin. Eugene was raised in Fort Valley, Georgia, where he was a graduate of Hunt High School. At the age of nineteen, he relocated to Ohio in search of employment.
Eugene's initial job was with the Columbus Athletic Club, followed by a position at the Downtown YMCA. It was there that a senior colleague and mentor encouraged him to apply for a job at Buckeye Steel Castings Company. Eugene subsequently worked as a Quality Control Inspector and Shop Steward for thirty-one years. During this time, he proudly served as President of United Steel Workers of America (USWA) Local Chapter 2342 and Treasurer of The Union Grievance Committee. Approaching retirement from Buckeye Steel, he accepted a clerical position with the Ohio AFL-CIO, where he was responsible for handling mass mailings, coordinating materials for state conventions, and facilitating communications about the organization's work.
Eugene dedicated his life to serving the Lord. He was baptized at Mt. Olivet Baptist Church under Rev. H. Beecher Hicks and later, united with Southfield Baptist Church. Currently, Eugene was a faithful member of First Church of God, where he served as a Sunday school teacher, past President of the Usher Board, member of the Mighty Men of Valor, and most recently, served as a Deacon.
During his leisure time, Eugene enjoyed bowling, was an avid fan of The Ohio State Buckeyes, the Cleveland Browns and Los Angeles Lakers. He also served as Treasurer of the Marion-Franklin Area Civic Association.
Blessed with seventy-eight years of life, our beloved Eugene Lumpkin Jr. entered eternal rest on Wednesday, March 26, 2025, at his home. He was preceded in death by his father, Eugene Lumpkin, Sr. and mother, Carrie Lowe.
