Evangeline Gavras Obituary

Mom was born in Detroit on July 10, 1925 to Greek parents Samuel and Eurania Corden, who had emigrated to the United States in the early 1900's. She had three siblings, Peter, Rita and Evans, and was the second youngest of the four. As a youngster, she worked in the family owned candy business, which today still sells fine chocolates online. She graduated Detroit Cooley High School and later earned a B.A. degree in English Literature from Michigan State University. She went on to earn a teaching certificate from Wayne State University and became an elementary school teacher in Detroit. She married Dad, Dino Gavras, in 1952, and later paused her teaching career to start a family. She had two sons, Mark and Paul. She resumed teaching in Southfield in 1967 and retired in 1985.
Mother enjoyed the arts and volunteered at the DIA for many years on the membership committee. She loved to socialize and helped organize a birthday club of eight women from St. George church, meeting for lunch throughout the year to celebrate each member's birthday. She was an avid Bridge player and frequently played at the Village Club in Bloomfield Hills, where she was a long time member. She was also a member of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) and attended local events.
She will be remembered most for her great love of life and family, and the positive outlook she brought to everything, always encouraging everyone to be their best and to believe anything is possible. We will miss her greatly.
Family will receive friends, Monday, May 20, 2024, from 4-8pm with a Trisagion 7 pm at A.J. Desmond & Sons (Vasu, Rodgers & Connell Chapel), 32515 Woodward Ave. Royal Oak, 48073.
Funeral service, Tuesday, May 21, 2024, 11 am at St. George Greek Orthodox Church, 43816 Woodward Ave, Bloomfield Hills, 48302. Visitation begins at 10 am.
Family suggests memorial tributes to the church.
