Evelyn Bergstrom Martin of El Campo passed away peacefully on January 8, 2025 at the age of 96. She was born on June 27, 1928, to Albert and Pauline Bergstrom and grew up in their family home north of Louise, Texas, nestled off FM 1160.
Evelyn's early education began at the one-room Gobbler Creek Schoolhouse that she attended with her close cousins and friends. She remembered her father would saddle the horse and take her back and forth to school. She later transferred to Louise High School, where she graduated salutatorian.
After high school, Evelyn embarked on a career at Commercial State Bank in El Campo. It was during this time that she met the love of her life, Charles "Charlie" Martin, upon his return from military service in Okinawa, Japan. Their connection was enduring, and they married in 1949, sharing 43 wonderful years together until Charlie's passing in 1993.
Evelyn and Charlie were proud parents to twin boys, Kenneth and Patrick, and daughter, Suzanne. Evelyn often said her children were her greatest accomplishments, and her love and pride in them were boundless. Together, the family built a legacy when they opened Martin Electric in El Campo in 1957. which is still in business today being run by their three children. Evelyn was instrumental in its success by lending her support and unwavering presence. Even in her later years, she could often be found at the shop, always offering a kind word or bringing food.
Faith was the cornerstone of Evelyn's life. She and Charlie were deeply involved with St. Paul's Methodist Church, where they devoted their time to fostering a strong and welcoming church community. At the church she was involved with the United Methodist Women's group and was the church treasurer for many years. Her faith guided her life and was an enduring source of comfort and strength.
Evelyn's life revolved around her family, and she was a constant, loving presence in the daily lives of her grandchildren. Whether cheering at their games, hosting family gatherings, or simply sharing stories at the dinner table, she created countless cherished memories.
Her joy extended beyond her family. Evelyn was a dedicated member of the El Campo Memorial Hospital's Sunshine Ladies volunteer group, where alongside some of her best friends she brought a bright smile and comfort to many. She also found great happiness in playing bridge and mahjong with her dear friends. She was also a member of El Campo Garden Club. Summers spent at the family bay house at El Campo Beach Club were among her happiest times, where she delighted in watching her children and grandchildren grow, creating traditions that will carry on for generations.
