Evelyn Louise (Schmidt) Spieker, 89, of Glyndon, MN, passed away on Saturday, April 12, 2025, at Sanford Health Hospital, Fargo, ND.
Evelyn was born on October 19, 1935, to John and Bertha (Maier) Schmidt in Solen, North Dakota. She grew up in Solen, where she attended and graduated from Solen High School in 1953. She attended Dakota Business College where she graduated. While waitressing at Frenchie’s Café, she met Dennis Spieker. Regardless of quitting him two times, they were united in marriage on April 11, 1955.
Evelyn and Dennis moved to Moorhead, MN, where they began raising their family. She held multiple jobs in the community including Montgomery Ward and waitressing at the Moorhead Country Club. They moved to Barnesville, living and working on a farm for the next five years, raising thousands of ducks, geese, and chickens. Evelyn and Dennis moved to Hawley, MN, where they owned the Spotlite Bar and the Buffalo River Speedway to name a few of the many businesses they owned.
Evelyn was an avid sports participant, competing in bowling and as a softball pitcher. She was very competitive and loved to play bingo, especially when she won, and going to the casino. She enjoyed traveling all over the world to places such as Japan, China, Australia and many other destinations. She enjoyed needlework and quilting, giving her creations to family members and friends. She loved to mow the yard, and could have recently been found on her rider, still mowing her grass at 89.
Evelyn is survived by her children, Bob (Chris) Spieker, Judy (Steve) Germaine, Kim (Steve) Elrod, Donna McMahan, Brenda (Steve) Bitker, and Paula (Alan) Greggersen; grandchildren, Bobby Spieker, Matthew (Jill) Spieker, Ashely Elrod, Justin Elrod, Melissa (Bruce) Boedenheimer, Jessica (Chris) Ferden, Adam (Danielle) Spieker, Sean McMahan, Alex McMahan, Mason Bitker, Ray Greggersen, and McKinna Greggersen; 12 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great grandchildren; her siblings, Donald (Bernice) Schmidt and Lillian (Wayne) Brewster; and many other loving relatives and friends. She is preceded in death by her loving husband, Dennis; son, Thomas Spieker; grandchildren, Zach Spieker and Ian McMahan; parents, John and Bertha; and her siblings, Genevieve and John.
Visitation will be from 10:00 A.M. to 11:00 A.M., followed by the Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 A.M., Tuesday, April 22, 2025, at St. Andrew’s Catholic Church, Hawley, MN. Burial will be at Hawley Cemetery, Hawley, MN, following the service at the church.
