Evelyn Edna Popp Wendel, 96, of Hillje, passed away May 22, 2024. She was born in Hillje on November 20, 1927 to the late Rudolph and Frances Pauler Popp. On January 2, 1946, Evelyn married Gilbert Wendel. They were partners and best friends for 64 years. Together they raised five beautiful children and enjoyed working many years side by side on the farm. Evelyn was CNA at Czech Catholic Nursing Home for 25 years. After retirement, she volunteered on Fridays with bingo at the nursing home. She was a member of the Catholic Daughters of America, K.J.Z. T., Altar Society, and VFW Ladies Auxiliary. She enjoyed quilting, baking, gardening, puzzles, dominoes, and spending time with her family.
She is survived by her daughters, Barbara Immenhauser of Nursery and Dorothy Mondrik and husband Edward of Palacios; sons, Gary Wendel and wife Angie of Louise, Glenn Wendel and wife Wilma of Pipe Creek and Gerald Wendel and wife Lisa of El Maton; 13 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren and one on the way; 6 great-great-grandchildren and sister, Geraldine Stavinoha and husband Albert of Louise, and sister-in-law Marie Popp.
Evelyn was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Gilbert Wendel; sister, Loraine Kunz; brother, Leo Popp and son-in-law, Harvey Immenhauser.
Visitation will begin at 9 a.m. Saturday, May 25 at St. Andrew's Catholic Church in Hillje with a Rosary recited at 9:30 a.m. Funeral Mass begins at 10 a.m. with the Rev. Wayne Flagg officiating. Burial will follow at St. Andrew's Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Daryl Wendel, Scott Strelec, Jeffrey Wendel, Kyle Wendel, Preston Wendel, and Michael Wendel.
Memorial donations in memory of Evelyn may be made to St. Procopius Catholic Church.
