Florence M. Spurgas, age 98, died peacefully on October 29, 2025. Florence was born on August 20, 1927, in Albany, NY and was the daughter of the late Louis and Anne (Sawczak) Tanski. She led a long life filled with faith, love, compassion and grace.
Florence grew up in Albany and went on to graduate from Linton High School. Her love for baking, cooking and sewing led her to pursue courses at Schenectady County Community College, in Interior Design and Tailoring where she honed her craft to make clothing for herself and others. Florence enjoyed her time as a telephone operator for a local doctor's office before working for several years in retail as the department manager of handbags, for The Carl Company, in Schenectady, NY. Upon her retirement she went on to watch over two of her grandchildren daily for eighteen years. She traveled to Italy, Paris and England with her daughter and numerous bus trips for sightseeing and shopping.
Florence met her beloved husband, Edward, and the two were married for seventy-six years. For Florence, faith came first in her life, as she served as a dedicated communicant for St. John the Baptist and St. John the Evangelist Churches and later The Church of the Immaculate Conception. She was also an avid member of the Rosary Society, where she was involved in various committees and helped set up numerous altar designs for Lent and other holidays throughout the year. Family had a huge impact on Florence's life. She was so very proud of her three children and cherished her grandchildren and the time she spent with each of them.
Florence is survived by her children Dr. Paul (Deborah) Spurgas, David (Kimberly) Spurgas, and Sharon (Joseph) D'Agostino; her wonderful grandchildren Brooke (Ryan) Cullinan, Ashley (John) Armitage, Reed D'Agostino, Dr. Morgan (Jennifer) Spurgas, and Kalie Spurgas; and her adored great-grandchildren Kensington and Ashton Cullinan, and Maximillion Spurgas.
In addition to her parents, and husband Florence is preceded in death by her siblings Elizabeth Mills, Walter Tanski, Louis Tanski, and Thomas Tanski.
A very special thank you to The Glens Falls Center for the unwavering support, care and joy the entire staff brought to Florence after her automobile accident nearly two years ago. It was because of you we were able to have that extra time with her and that she became the resident Grams for everyone at the center.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, November 3, 2025, at 10:00am at the Church of the Immaculate Conception, 400 Saratoga Road, Glenville, NY.
Interment will follow at Our Lady of Angels Cemetery, Colonie, NY.
