Floyd Harthun, 88, Marshalltown, Iowa, passed away peacefully and went to be with his Lord and Savior on the evening of August 17, 2023 at the Willows of Marshalltown surrounded by his wife and children.
Services for Floyd will be held on Thursday, August 24, 2023 at Our Savior Lutheran Church in Marshalltown beginning at 11:00 A.M. A visitation for family and friends will be held one hour prior to services. Memorials in Floyd's name may be directed to Our Savior Lutheran Church. Floyd Peter Harthun was born May 6, 1935 in Fosston, Minnesota and was the youngest of four children born to Charles and Emma (Freed) Harthun. Floyd grew up in Fosston where he attended Fosston High School and graduated in 1952.
Following high school, Floyd enlisted in the United States Armed Forces where he served in the Army in a Paratrooper with the 11th Airborne Division during the Korean War Conflict. He served his country for two years before being honorably discharged.
On September 14, 1957, he married the love of his life Ella Hegg in Fosston, Minnesota. He began taking classes at the University of Minnesota in St. Paul where they resided during their first years of marriage. He completed his Bachelors of Science in mechanical engineering and following graduation he was hired by Fisher Controls. He and Ella relocated to Marshalltown, where he worked at their Governor Road facility. He would become the Manager of the Tech Center until his retirement in 1993.
Together they also brought two children, Sharon and Brian, into the world whom they raised together.
Floyd became civically involved within the Marshalltown Community serving on the Marshalltown Community School District Board from 1978-1989, Marshalltown City Council from 1996-1998 and serving as the Mayor of Marshalltown from 1998-2005. As mayor he was active in the Sister Cities program. Marshalltown's sister city was in Koshigaya, Japan, where they had even planted a tree in his honor during their visit.
Floyd was a founding member of Our Savior Lutheran Church in Marshalltown where he served as the church president multiple times. He was also on boards of the United Way, Youth and Shelter Services and the Marshalltown Public Library. He was actively involved with the Noon Optimist Club where he participated in events such as Special Olympics Iowa and the Pedal Pull. In this organization he was also the District Governor. He received the honor of being named the Marshalltown's Optimist Citizen of the year in 2006.
Floyd enjoyed golfing, woodworking, maintaining their various cars and fixing his daughter's lawnmower.
Those left to remember and cherish his memory are his wife of 65 years, Ella Harthun; his children Sharon (Ron) Lutcavish and Brian Harthun; his grandchildren, Claire (John Gutta) North, Collin North, and Ethan Harthun.
He is preceded in death by his parents Charles and Emma Harthun; and his siblings, Emery Harthun, Harold Harthun, and Helen London.
