Frank David Zimmerman, 76, went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, April 26, 2023 at his home. He was a native of Guilford County and and his soulmate of 36 years, Dona Underwood Zimmerman who survives. He was the son of the late Frank and Mary Louise Eanes Zimmerman.
David graduated from North East High School in 1965. He was a Vietnam Veteran serving with the US Army and participating in the TET offensive in Saigon. He obtained the rank of Sergeant and received a purple heart as a result of combat. David attended New Bessemer Baptist Church. He was a member of the VFW Post Midway-Monroeton. David was a tobacco farmer, continuing the family farm that is now in its 4th generation. He enjoyed spending time on his tractor, mowing, vegetable gardening and fishing. David spent 18 years as a Detention officer with Guilford County and was a tractor trailer driver in the local area. He was a devoted husband, father and brother, but his greatest joy was spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife, Dona Underwood Zimmerman of the home; sons, Frank David Zimmerman, Jr. of Iowa, Timothy Zimmerman and wife, Shanna of Browns Summit and Jonathan Jones and wife, Lisa of Reidsville; grandchildren, Patrick Keene (fiancée Jackie), Brandon (Sydney) Zimmerman, Cole Zimmerman, Ryder Jolley, Remi Zimmerman, Julian (Christy) Rodriguez-Perez, Christian (Kaylynn) Rodriguez-Perez, Sebastian Rodriguez-Perez and Peyton Rodriguez-Perez; great granddaughter, Ella Rodriguez-Perez; sister, Ann Vaughn and husband, Richard of Greensboro and a brother, James Zimmerman and wife, Kathy of McLeansville. He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Wayne Thornton Zimmerman and John Earl Zimmerman, Sr.
A service to celebrate his life will be held on Wednesday, May 3, 2023 at 2:00 pm at New Bessemer Baptist Church by Rev. J. S. “Bud” Parrish. The burial will follow at Westminster Gardens with military honors by the US Army. The family will receive friends from 12:30-1:45pm prior on Wednesday at the church and other times at the home of Timothy Zimmerman, 5769 B Osceola Ossipee Road in Browns Summit.
