Fred Frey III Obituary

Fred Charles Frey, III, a lifelong resident of Baton Rouge, died April 6, 2024. He was born October 21, 1952 in San Marcos, TX. He was 71 years old. Fred attended Baton Rouge High School and LSU. It was at Baton Rouge High where he met his wife, Jan. In 1974, he started Frey Photography. He photographed five generations over 50 years, and created the classic black and white portrait that is instantly recognizable. Fred was active in the community as a member of the Rotary Club of Baton Rouge, the vestry of St. James Episcopal Church, and the board of St. James Episcopal Day School. He donated his photography services to many organizations - including archiving and documenting the history of St. James Church, Episcopal High School and the Junior League of Baton Rouge. Fred was also the trusted photographer for the Mystic Krewe of Achilles for many years. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Janet Payne Frey; son Fred Charles Frey, IV (Ashley); daughters Genevieve Frey Fields (Gidget), and Anna Caroline Frey; his grandchildren, Fred Charles (Major) Frey, V, Mary Ann Caroline Frey, and Jeffrey Jackson (Jake) Frey and John Henry Fields. He is also survived by his sister, Jeannie Frey Rhodes, her husband Craig, and niece Martha Larguier Rhodes, as well as numerous cousins and extended family. He is preceded in death by his parents, Martha Larguier Stone and Fred Charles Frey, Jr. Fred's legacy will be the priceless memories he created for family and friends through his photography. His institutional knowledge was vast, and his archives are pristine. His family is so proud and grateful for all he has left us. The family is grateful for Dr. Gerald Militello and his caring kind nurses in the chemo lab. Visitation will be at St. James Episcopal Church on Tuesday, April 9 at 9:00 am, followed by a burial service with Holy Eucharist at 11:00 am. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. James Episcopal Church and Cancer Services of Baton Rouge or a charity of your choosing.

Jan, I was so saddened to read about Freddie's passing. I remember being in awe when we would go to Uncle John's and Aunt Ginger's house and you, and Freddie would be there. You two were the coolest couple we had ever been around. We four siblings got to see you and Freddie go from being friends to getting married to having children and raising a family. It was such a blessing to be part of the Payne family and be a part of the many memories made at the house on Wakefield. Daddy sends his sympathies and your family will be in my prayers. Much love, Mandy

I'm so sorry to hear of Fred's passing; he was a dear friend to me over the 20+ years I lived in Baton Rouge. His pictures always made everyone look their very best; my favorite one was with me with my cat Pacobell who had never been photographed but somehow settled down for Fred. He was always available for good talk and for good stories about Baton Rougeans. Sending my condolences to Jan and family from Oxford, MS. Julia Thornton

34 years ago Fred began to memorialize our children in his beautiful photos. As time went on his art chronicled their lives as well as that our granddaughter. Fred also made lasting treasures for our extended family when he photographed our grandfather and more recently our mom. During the photo sessions he made everyone comfortable; made us laugh and made his subjects feel and look beautiful. Thank you Fred for capturing memories that we will cherish. Jan-Charlie, Daniel, Kate, Lily and I are thinking of you.

I am so sad to read this. He will be sorely missed by his large family, friends and fans. It was always fun watching his talent shine. I treasure the many beautiful photographs he took of my family. Visitors in my home always ask about the photographer with such an eye for the soul of his subject.
I´m sure once he gets settled in heaven, he will be taking note of some interesting subjects. Wish he could share the new ones with us!

My heart is broken upon learning of Freddie´s untimely passing. He was truly a unique, intelligent, talented, witty, kind and excessively generous cousin! I spent many great times with Freddie and Jan. I have never laughed more heartily with anyone than Freddie and Jan. Jan was his steadfast and devoted wife and business partner throughout their marriage. I remember visiting them in the garage apartment when they first married behind Fred and Martha´s home. So many fun times. His photography is legendary and adorns the walls of my home and so many homes all over the world. Bill Cooper said he was not a photographer he was a magician! No one can ever take his place. I will miss Freddie for the rest of my life. Johnnie Sue Larguier Creel

A legend is gone but he will never be forgotten. Every girl wanted Freddie to take their picture because he made everyone look beautiful, way before the days of filters and apps on our phones or computers..... but most of all he created lastly and loving memories caught on film.
Thank you Freddie!! You will be missed but never forgotten. May you rest in Eternal peace. My sincere condolences to Jan and the entire Frey family.
