Fred Kaprove of Farmington, formerly of West Hartford and East Hartford, passed away on March 10th, 2025 at the age of 102. He was the adored husband of the late Mae Karp Kaprove for 74 years.
Fred was born in Springfield, MA in 1923, the son of Sophie Fialky Kaprove and Samuel Kaprove. He grew up in Hartford and graduated from Weaver High School in 1941. He then served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II as an Aerial Gunner Specialist from 1942 to 1946. After the War, he graduated from the University of Connecticut in 1949. In later years he earned a Masters degree in Education and a sixth year certificate in Reading from the University of Hartford.
Fred was a teacher and reading consultant for more than thirty years. He taught at all levels - elementary, secondary, and college in South Windsor, East Hartford, and Manchester. Through teaching and tutoring, he was beloved by his many students, and helping them attain their life goals brought him great satisfaction. After his retirement in 1981, he embarked upon a second successful career as a government contract administrator, consulting with numerous local manufacturers until 2009.
Fred had many hobbies that filled his busy life. He and Mae spent happy days golfing and taking seaside vacations. Fred was also an avid reader, an excellent bridge and poker player, and a life-long Red Sox and UConn sports fan.
Fred was predeceased by his wife Mae Kaprove and his sister Ruth Alpert. He leaves behind a daughter Beth Ratner and her husband Charles, a son Michael Kaprove and his wife Debbie, grandsons Adam Kaprove and his wife Sarah, Ben Ratner and his wife Elizabeth, Jared Kaprove and his wife Caitlin, and highly beloved great grandchildren Emma, Abbie, Eleanor, Abigail, and Theodore. He will also be missed by his nieces and nephews, and his many golf, poker, and bridge buddies who shared his zest for life.
Donations may be made in memory of Fred to the UConn Foundation's Graduate Medical Education Fund. https://www.foundation.uconn.edu/give-now/search/?fund_keywords=medical+school
A memorial gathering will be held on Sunday, March 23 at 10:30 a.m. at B'nai Tikvoh-Sholom, 180 Still Road, Bloomfield, CT.

As a neighbor for 21 years Lady Nita and I were blest to know Fred and Mae as friends. Our prayers are for the family and live in hope there will be a future reunion day promised by the Old Testament prophets who declared a Messiah will come and make all things new. Sincerely. Terry Wiles, Bishop

It was with great sorrow that I read of Mr. Kaprove´s passing but I celebrate the fact that he lived such a long and fulfilling life. Mr. Kaprove was my fifth grade teacher at Pleasant Valley School in South Windsor. He was also the first male teacher I had in school. His style of teaching was so different from any other teacher I had had thus far and it was his example that made me want to be a teacher. For the first time, he empowered us to `think outside of the box´. We became partners in the educating of our fellow students and in doing so, learned the material enough to teach it to the class. He encouraged theater and creative ways to demonstrate what we were learning. Other teachers had us memorize facts and regurgitate those facts back to them in tests. That was not Mr. Kaprove´s style.
I taught high school for 35 years and after my retirement, opened my own preschool which I´ve had for the past 15 years. I love teaching and one of my biggest regrets is that I never tracked him down to tell him how much he meant to me.

Many happy memories of playing golf with Fred at Ellington Ridge CC. He and Mae were dear friends of my late parents Milton and Selma Stein. May his memory be a blessing
