Fred Wesley "Freddie" Karjalainen

Fred "Freddie" Wesley Karjalainen, 96, of Frederick, SD passed away on August 24, 2023, at Angelhaus in Aberdeen, SD. Fred was born to William and Emma Karjalainen on October 27, 1926 in the Savo Township, Frederick, SD. He grew up on several farms in rural Frederick. He served in the U.S. Army with the 25th Lightning Division as a Private First Class from 1944-1946. He married Adeline Steinwand Veland on July 23, 1954. They farmed in Frederick, SD, until he retired in 2000 and moved to Aberdeen in 2005. They were married for almost 65 years before Adeline passed away in 2019. Fred held many jobs in his life including farming, farm equipment and car sales and construction. He also helped his wife, Adeline, with her antique business, known as Adeline's Antiques. He volunteered with the Frederick American Legion and with maintenance for the Finnish Apostolic Lutheran Church and Cemetery (North Savo Cemetery), where he will be placed to rest next to Adeline and other family members. Grateful for having shared Fred's life are his five children: Steve (Jean) Karjalainen, Joan (Kyle) Westfall, Kathy Karjalainen, Sandy (Greg) Redshaw, and Rick Karjalainen. He adored his grandchildren and great-grandchildren: Neil (Lyn) Karjalainen and their children: Tyler, Alek, Lia, and Eli, Craig (Kathryn) Karjalainen, Elise Westfall (Sam Hoppock), Alexis, Jared and Wyatt Redshaw. He leaves behind many cherished nieces and nephews and other family members. Preceding Fred in death are his parents: William and Emma Karjalainen his wife, Adeline and his 8 siblings.
A memorial service will be held October 28, at 1 p.m. at St. Paul's Lutheran Fellowship Hall in Frederick, SD, with interment at 3 p.m. at the Finnish Apostolic Lutheran Church Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Finnish Apostolic Lutheran Church Cemetery (North Savo Cemetery) for maintenance.
