Frederick Edward Burdell, age 82, of Bidwell, Ohio, went to be with our Lord and Savior, Thursday, February 27, 2025, while in Holzer Medical Center. Born December 21, 1942, in Gallipolis, he was the son of the late Francis and Esta (Vollborn) Burdell.
Frederick is survived by his loving sister, Ernestine (Keith) Smith of Bidwell, Ohio. He is also survived by nieces and nephews: David (Teri) Burdell of Bidwell, Harold (Robin) Burdell of Gallipolis, Jill (Todd) Breyfogle of Bidwell, Brad Burdell of San Antonio, Texas and Carita (Jason) Montgomery of Crown City, Ohio. He also has many great nieces and nephews as well as some great-great-nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his loving caregivers Luther (Brenda) Hunt as well as a former employee, Luther (D.J.) Hunt, Jr.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by sister, Freida Burdell and brother, Lawrence Burdell.
Frederick was a 1960 graduate of Rio Grande High School. He then attended and graduated from Rio Grande College in 1964. In 1971, he graduated from Ohio University with a master's degree.
While in college, Frederick worked for Carl Winters as a farm hand. After graduating from Rio Grande College, he was a science teacher for a combined total of 20 years at Union Furnace and Logan High School. He was recognized and won many awards for being an outstanding teacher that truly invested in his students and dedication to the education of young minds. While he was thought of highly in the education field by his peers and students, Frederick quietly fought, yet felt he ultimately lost, a long, hard battle to elevate the importance of academics in comparison to athletics in the schools where he taught. He felt very strongly about the importance of a good education and did his best to instill those values in the youth he had in the classroom.
Another important job that Frederick took on was being a loving caregiver to his cousin, Nellie Scarberry, and to his parents, for many years.
He was a very well-known businessman and beekeeper of Ohio Hill Country Honey. He owned and operated his own bee and honey business for forty-five years. He not only tended the bees, but he also educated anyone interested and willing to learn. He spent many years volunteering for Gallia County Agriculture Day teaching fourth graders about bee keeping and bee cycles. He also set up at the Bob Evans Farm Festival for over forty years educating the community about bees.
Frederick was a long-time member of Calvary Baptist Church in Rio Grande, Ohio. He accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior while in his teenage years. He volunteered many hours to the church and invested in his church family.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM Monday, March 3, 2025, in the McCoy-Moore Funeral Home, Vinton Chapel. Burial will follow in Calvary Baptist Church Cemetery, Rio Grande, Ohio. Family and friends may call at the funeral home Sunday, 4:00-6:00 PM.
