Fred Maas died on October 17, 2025 at the age of 81. He was a loving husband to Jane for 55 years. Fred dearly loved his children: Sarah (Felix Scheuplein), Julie, and John (Rakesh Satyal).
Survived by his devoted wife, Jane, his children and their spouses, his sister Kathleen Maas, his sister-in-law, Mary Alice Pipkorn, his niece Beth Zolondek and her family, and many dear friends and neighbors. Preceded in death by his beloved mother, Betty Maas, his infant brother John Edwin Maas, and his nephew, Mark Schwietzer.
Fred graduated from Washington High School and UW-Milwaukee. He was a gifted athlete, playing as a 6'4" center on the UW-M Panthers basketball team. Fred, also known as "Duke", held the record for career free throw accuracy (77.2%) at the time of his graduation in 1968. Fred played 3rd baseman on the Copper Hearth softball team of Milwaukee, winning the world slow-pitch championship in Cleveland in 1969.
Fred was a social studies teacher at Oconomowoc Middle School for 25 years, inspiring a love for history in many young people. Fred also coached basketball and girls' softball in Oconomowoc.
In his retirement, Fred enjoyed walking in the woods, biking, reading, taking road trips with Jane, playing basketball, and fishing (always catch-and-release). He loved his dogs, Penny, Molly and Smokey. He especially loved traveling to visit his five "kids". He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
A private memorial service will be held by Fred's family. In lieu of flowers, please consider voting for Democratic candidates in future elections.
