Garry Peter Waterman passed away October 6, 2025, in Charlton at the age of 78. He peacefully passed after declining with complications related to ALS. He was born on April 23, 1947 in Troy, NY to William and Elizabeth Waterman. He married Sandra Truax in 1970 in Rotterdam, moving around NY from Utica to Syracuse to Elmira to Albany due to work, they settled in Charlton to live in 1984.
Garry graduated from LaSalle Institute and earned his Associates in Electrical Technology from Hudson Valley Community College in 1966. He spent his career working with large computer systems as a Field District Specialist with MAI, Sorbus, Decision One, Bell Atlantic, and EMC Global Services. He was awarded twice with the Magna Award for Excellence and The Pinnacle of Excellence Award for his work ethic and dedication and was honored with trips to Bermuda and St. Thomas. He retired in 2009. Garry served with pride for the Harmony Corners Volunteer Fire Department for 36 years and he considered them his second family. He has been awarded New York State Assembly Certificates of Merit and was granted Life Membership status recognizing his years of service. He served as the auditor for the fire department and was captain of the fire police. Garry looked forward to and proudly worked the semi-annual chicken BBQ; recommending it to everyone. He was also an assistant to his wife's Girl Scout troop and worshipped at St. Mary's Church in Galway.
Garry enjoyed spending time with his family; playing Rummikub with Kim, operating his tractor and training Caleb how to use it, and building things with his grandsons. He relished his time outdoors, camping and canoeing with his family, and working in the yard. He enjoyed cheering on Kim in Special Olympics, being his grandsons' biggest sports fan, and visiting national parks with Sandy in retirement. He delighted in dad jokes, listening to Paul Harvey, and learning about history. Garry loved his gadgets and tools and analyzing the best way to do a project; his mind constantly working. He had a knack for finding bargains, saw the potential in everything, was driven to share his wisdom and always had a story to tell. Garry was a kind and gentle person who enjoyed life, family and friends.
He is predeceased by his parents. Garry is survived by his wife of 55 years, Sandra, his daughters, Kimberly, Michelle Decker, and Barbara Ruiz and her husband, Steve.
