Gary Ledesma Obituary

Publish in a newspaper

Gary Ledesma –devoted husband, caring father of three, loving grandfather of five, and friend to many– at the age of 75 made his journey on February 25, 2024 to be with his Lord and Savior in Heaven.
Gary was born the eighth child in a family of fifteen children on November 24, 1948 to Jess and Jennie Ledesma. After graduating from Westmont High School in 1966, Gary went on to attend and graduate from San Jose City College where he graduated with his AA degree in Accounting in 1969, San Jose State University with his BA degree in Sociology in 1972 and ultimately graduated from Santa Clara University with his Master's degree in Counseling Psychology in 1973. From his experiences as a farmworker to a student-athlete (basketball) rising up in higher education, he understood the platform needed for student upward mobility. Gary began his career in academic counseling in the early 1970's. Shortly after starting his career, he met his beautiful wife, Jennifer Standing-Elk at a Native American basketball tournament. They spent the next 47 years building their family together. Gary was a strong, kind, loving and supportive dad to his son Wanbli "Mike" and two daughters Sina and Anpa Wi (Elena). He is also survived by his five grandchildren, Jordan, Wanbli-Lorenzo, Maya, Elia, and Mia and his son-in-law David Dutra.
Being a grandpa and holding the role of a father again came natural to Gary. He took on the role of a father again to his grandchildren Jordan, Wanbli-Lorenzo, and Maya when his son, Wanbli passed away. Gary was a force of nature, determined to provide for his family and give them all the life they deserved. His family meant more to him than anything else in the world, something he proudly and often mentioned. In his free time, when he was a young adult he loved playing basketball with his brothers on their team "Six Brothers" and after the birth of his kids he enjoyed playing family basketball in their front yard, YMCA and at the park, he also enjoyed taking the kids on short road trips to the beach, Disneyland, amusement parks/zoos, and family gatherings. As a sports enthusiast, Gary loved game day, watching and attending Oakland (Not Vegas!) Raider and Golden State Warriors games was truly enjoyable. Hosting his children, grandchildren and son-in-law at the Ledesma family home for home-cooked meals prepared by his amazing wife, Jennifer, taking a dip in the swimming pool with his children and grandchildren, and basking in the joys of a house full of family laughter and happiness filled Gary's heart. His family was the most important thing in his life before sports and after God.
As for Gary's monumental career endeavors, he retired from San Jose City College as General/Veterans Counseling Faculty member in 2016, after 40+ years of service; he was true to form in his commitment to his life's work. Gary was a strong advocate for all students and worked ardently to improve the campus climate. He was instrumental in working with all populations, especially underrepresented and first-generation college students. Through his efforts, Gary accomplished many goals which led to progressive change in the campus climate, outlook and resources for students. He was a staunch supporter of equity and change. His San Jose City College family held Gary in very high regard and believed him to be a truly kind-hearted, gracious, humble, calm, caring, charismatic, intelligent, mindful, compassionate human being.
Gary was a man of strong faith, he read the Bible daily and attended his family's church, Cathedral of Faith weekly with his family. He prayed for his family several times a day, he prayed each time a family member would leave the house, he prayed each time his kids/grandkids traveled, and he especially prayed when his family members were sick as he would lay his hands on their heads and say a prayer.
Gary is preceded in death by his son Wanbli "Mike" Ledesma, his parents Jess Ledesma and Jennie Ledesma, his sisters Virginia and Jackie Ledesma, his brothers Ronnie, Willie, Steve, and Butch Ledesma.
He is survived by his sisters, Helen Hernandez, Linda Shadowens, Mary Lou Martinez, Marie Garcia, Sharon Rodriquez, and Gina Reyes. He is survived by his brothers, Donnie Ledesma, Jack Ledesma and Lance Ledesma. He is also survived by his numerous in-laws, cousins, nieces, nephews, friends, and SJECCD family.
Gary was a devoted husband, caring father and grandfather, brother, and uncle. He will be remembered for all the heart he shared with his friends and family. He truly loved each of them and if you knew him, you knew it. When his time came, he carried himself with dignity, strength, and full of love for those who went before him. He will be missed dearly.

Happy Easter in Heaven, Gary
Like your beloved mother, Jennie Ledesma, Easter held a special place in our hearts and in our family. Though Christmas came first in the life of Jesus, Easter was the first celebration in Christian tradition - and it became the most meaningful for us, too.
You helped make both of these holidays beautiful and sacred in our family, and those traditions continue because of you.
We love you deeply, we miss you always, and we carry your spirit with us. Wishing you a peaceful Easter in Heaven, where you´ve gone to rest in the arms of our Savior.

It was super hot outside today!!! After work, I came home and jumped straight into the pool! I miss when you used to keep me company in the backyard, or when you would go to 7/11 to buy me snacks. It was nice to eat them after swimming. Anyways, thought of you. Love and miss you papa!

Hi Papa, I wish you were here with all of us. The holidays don´t feel the same without you. I catch myself reminiscing so much about the things we would do as a family before Christmas. I´m glad we did all those things together, it´s something I´ll always remember and keep with me. Such great memories. We´ll have a fresh Christmas tree up soon. Love and miss you papa. <3

Missing you everyday still papa, you meant the world to me. Those promises I had written on that one piece of paper I given you in the hospital, well I am fulfilling those promises while growing in faith with the Lord Yeshua (Jesus), I thank you for being my introduction to the Lord in my life. I am working with a church now and received gifts from The Holy Spirit and came super far into my spiritual life with Jesus! Always attending church and always praying. I know you´re doing amazing in Heaven right now with the Lord and the Holy Angels!! I know you guys up in Heaven are still waiting for Jesus to make his 2nd return to Earth, Im waiting too haha but until then i´m going to still be that Man of God you always wanted me to be!! I know when I do pass away (hopefully when im 100 years) that I will see you at the gates of Heaven and we will be with each other eternally! All I have to do is believe that Jesus Christ died on the cross for my sins and raised on the 3rd day and that´s all it takes to get to heaven! I will live by his righteous right hand forever. Papa I miss you so much but really just am more jealous cuz your in Heaven am i´m not LOL, I wish to be with the Lord man I love him so much! I know you won´t be able to watch over me because the world is full of sin and there shall be no sin in Heaven as it is Holy! But your spirit lives on and on! Thank you for being my Father and not just my Grandfather but also thank you for being my best friend, i love you papa!

Gary would joke with my dad about marrying Native women. He always had a smile on his face and made my family and I feel so much love. Safe journey Uncle.

Gary was married to my very good friend Jennifer and I remember him being a nice guy. I think I only saw him a few times throughout the years, but every time I saw him, he was always nice.

Sending love and condolences to all of those mourning this tremendous loss, especially to Jennifer and the rest of Gary's family.
He was such a good man with a beautiful, nurturing spirit. I'm very thankful to have been mentored by him. He never wavered in encouraging me to set and pursue goals for a better future for myself and my loved ones.
I wanted to share my favorite picture of him here. I asked him to do a hunky pose so I could take a picture for my Nana (who adored him and always commented on how "guapo" (handsome) he was). He obliged by cheesing and flexing for the camera. Obviously Nana appreciated the picture! But I love it too because he's exactly how I'll always think of him, big and strong, but also sweet and generous, at home with his family who he loved more than anything, and with the sun shining down on him. Rest in Power, Gary. You are so loved.

Mrs. L and Family,
Our deepest condolences to all of you and the family..
May the Lord continue to give you peace and strength.
May Mr. L R.I.P.
Mr. L,
I want to thank you so much for everything that you did for me.
When I met you I saw and felt the love that you projected to ever person/ student that crossed paths with you...The Love of Jesus!

I started SJCC in 1999 without any knowledge of what I was doing.
When I got an appointment with you, you encouraged me to go full force in bettering my personal growth and education...You gave me all the resources for a smoother educational ride.
You encouraged me and told me that age didn't matter..
I saw you as my Educational Father that encouraged me every time you saw me, with high threes, (lol)
There were times that I wanted to quit school and you would tell me, in a soft and humble voice, "take one day at a time" Nancy..
I guess I bugged you so much that you included me as part as your family...(Lol)
When I met your daughter Elena I said, to myself I have someone else to bug..
Elena,
Thank you for making Mr. L so proud of you and all your accomplishments.. He is so so proud of his baby girl!
Now it is 2 of us Girl! (Lol)

Mrs. L Thank you for being his backbone that always made him smile and helped him be the Godly man he was..
They say that behind a Good man there is an amazing and beautiful blessed woman...
I am so proud to say that because of him and all the SJCC support system that I had, I am the only one of eight in my family that has pursued a higher education...
Thank you, Thank you with all my heart!
Prayers to you Mr. L and the family.
Love you, Ledesma Family..

First and foremost sending Condolences to our Amazing beautiful family Auntie/Nana Jennifer Standing-Elk, Cousins Wanbli, Sina, Elena, my nieces JORDAN, MAYA, ELIA, MIA & my HANDSOME NEPHEW LIL WANBLI LORENZO. When I was a child going to GRANDMA JENNIE'S HESTER HOUSE, Uncle Gary at the head of table for breakfast reading the newspaper having real CONVERSATIONS not FACEBOOK or SOCIAL MEDIA MY UNCLE GARY was so CARING & LOVING and displayed how a REAL FAMILY COMMUNICATED. All cousins Jennie, Stephanie & Christie played basketball with the rest of my Uncles Butch, Jack, Lance in the Indian basketball leagues that was one of the best memories because we got to see how talented HE PLAYED BASKETBAL & also Auntie/Nana Jennifer was playing basketball as well. Uncle Gary introduced us nieces to his FUTURE WIFE JENNIFER STANDING-ELK. The POWER COUPLE had a LOVING WEDDING. On the day when he married our Nana/Aunt I saw the most GORGEOUS MRS. JENNIFER LEDESMA Lakota WONDER WOMAN I knew my UNCLE GARY made the SMARTEST choice ever to MARRY this STRONG, SMART AND LOVING WOMAN. The rest of this is a STORY BOOK Uncle Gary had an AMAZING life WITH MY RESPECTFUL, LOVING & CARING COUSINS WANBLI, ELENA & SINA WHICH WAS A PRODUCT FROM THE LOVING UNION GARY & JENNIFER.

I met Mr. Gary at their family home because I grew up with his daughter Elena who is my best friend. Gary was this gentle giant and always greeted me with much love and kindness.

My favorite memories of Mr Gary are his big hugs. He always gave me the biggest hug plus, I´m short and he´s so tall he would just tower over me and bear me, but it was the sweetest thing because he was so kind and compassionate.

I´d always remember Mr. Gary as being a sweet, gentle and kind human being. I see him as always a leader for his family and the San Jose city community. I know he did so much for the students and the school there. I love just coming to their house and seeing him playing with his grandkids. I always remember that he be swimming in the pool or just chilling in the backyard. Always had a smile on his face and was in a good mood. There´s so many reminders that I see in Elaina that reminds me of him - his mannerism , his height (lol!) and her quiet but powerful spirit.

Gary was a great role model in our community and is his family. he will be greatly missed. I´m very fortunate to have known him and cross paths with him. Rest in peace Gary - we love you always.!
