Gary Macro Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Sawyer-Fuller Funeral Home & Cremation Services on May 25, 2024.
Gary Domenic Macro, 71, of Royal Oak, MI passed peacefully on May 19, 2024 with his wife Dawn, who was the love of his life, and family by his side.
Gary was an exceptional human being. His inherent kindness, whip-smart intellect and deep appreciation for the small things in life were his hallmark. Deeply loyal to his countless life-long friends and family, he lived life to its fullest with a twinkle in his eye and a wicked sense of humor thrown in. His broad smile and bright laugh will echo in our hearts forever.
Born in Detroit, Gary was the second son of the late Blase (Pete) and Katherine (Katie) Macro and was the best brother to Tom (Lynn) Macro and Sheryl (Todd) Meerman.
Graduating from Royal Oak Dondero in 1971, he went on to obtain a degree with honors in Civil Engineering from Macomb Community College. Ever a life-long learner Gary obtained a second degree from Wayne State University where he graduated Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Science in Psychology.
After many memorable years with the Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Company's Farmer Jack chain, he transitioned into a second career with Dynamic Control International, an Engineering company that specialized in Research and Development. Gary remained with DCI until his retirement.
Humble, kind and unpretentious, Gary had a natural ability to connect and meet people where they were at. Throughout his life, he immersed himself in creating lasting memories with his family and friends. He spent many sun filled days bobbing around on Lake St. Clair peacefully fishing with his Grandpa and flying his beautiful kites on Belle Isle. His active participation in the Run for the Gold road rallies was legendary. For twenty five years, no matter how cold it was, he was there for Tigers Opening Day. For over two decades he competed with his "Moose gang" in volleyball leagues where his prowess with spiking a ball was a site to behold. An avid festival and concert goer for most of his life he could recall in great detail each venue and the friends he went with.
In retirement, Gary obtained deep satisfaction in reading extensively and matching his wits against expert level crosswords and diagram less puzzles. He took great pride in continually adding to his treasured CD collection all the while, year after year, rooting for his beloved Lions. Together, Gary and Dawn spent their weekends driving around the backroads of Michigan, digging in dusty basements for those special garage and estate sale finds while quietly enjoying the simple pleasures of being together.
To have met Gary was to have gained a friend. He will be missed by everyone who was most fortunate to have known him.
The family will receive friends on Saturday June 1st from 10:00 AM until 12:30 PM followed by a Memorial Service at Sawyer Fuller Funeral Home, 2125 12 Mile Road, Berkley, (two blocks west of Woodward Avenue).
In lieu of flowers, and as a passionate animal lover, Gary requested any Memorial donations be made to New Beginnings Animal Rescue of Royal Oak, MI www.nbarmichigan.org or the Michigan Humane Society www.michiganhumane.org

Sighhh, my dear best friend, Gary. Not a day goes by without thinking about you. I know you are looking out for your core group of friends. We all miss you so much.

I feel you in every breeze, see you in every sunrise and sunset. I hear you when the wind gently kisses any wind chime nearby. You´re not truly gone; your memory and spirit flows through every life you touched. I need your cheerful spirit, words of comfort and your superhuman power of positive energy more than ever. You were always there for me on this "plane" of existence...and I know you´re keeping watch wherever your energy decides to travel in the great beyond.

Give hugs to our mutual friends and family who have also gone. We will ALL meet again in some form or another; of this I am certain. Love and energy can´t be destroyed...just changed.

Always, Laura

"In loving memory of Gary. I´ll miss our talks/jokes/secrets shared and kept. Gary was always there when I needed him - without fail. He was my best friend (I´m not the only one who considered him their best friend) and his spirit is strong; both on earth and wherever he chooses to roam in the great ether. Someone as loved and loving as our Gary is a blessing in this life ("aye-aye, Captain")."
